Happy New Year! from Foreign Language for Youth
FLY Update
FLY classes have gotten off to a great start in the new year! Our teachers have been impressed with how much their students remember, even after the long winter break. We are looking forward to a great second half of the year and are already anticipating wonderful class presentations coming up in the next couple of months!
Here's an idea of some vocabulary your student may be learning now and in the next couple of weeks:
-Vocabulary related to food and meals in their target language
-How to count by tens in their target language
-The names of different animals in their target language
Here are some fun videos posted on Facebook and Twitter this week. Don't forget to like us on facebook for updates and helpful ways to practice at home.

UW Spanish Drawing Contest
If your student is entering the drawing contest, on the cover sheet you will have to provide a teacher name and phone number. You may use the following:
Konni Barich, Executive Director
Foreign Language for Youth
425-420-2854
Here's the information for the contest:
The Center for Spanish Studies at the University of Washington has announced their annual drawing contest for Elementary and Middle School students. There will be three prizes for each level. The topic is “Esta es mi familia” / “This is my family”. The drawings should be no larger than 8”x10” and submitted by mail and postmarked to the Center of Spanish Studies prior to February 28th, 2014, with the attached cover sheet. The Center asks that the student please not frame the drawing, and to include the Cover Sheet. This contest is not part of the FLY Curriculum and is therefore not required work. But since we know about it and thought it would be interesting for FLY Students, we've included it in our newsletter so that you are aware of the contest should your student wish to participate. All questions about this program should be directed to spnrectr@uw.edu.

FLY College Scholarships
Did you know that FLY is giving out two $250 scholarships to graduating seniors who are also FLY Alumni? Students who have demonstrated their dedication to and passion for their new language through continued study in high school are eligible. If you know a graduating senior who participated in the FLY program, contact us for more information about how to apply. If your student continues to study a foreign language in high school, they may be eligible for one of our scholarships some day! :)
Student Spotlight
To practice describing different kinds of weather, one of our Spanish students used these fun pictures from magazines that her teacher brought in.
