Foundation A.C.E Award
The Lawrence Schools Foundation was able to surprise a special member of the Deerfield Elementary staff with a Spring 2022 A.C.E. Award along with a check for $500 to paraeducator, Lisa Maziar.
Maziar is a Paraeducator for the Special Education Resource Team at Deerfield Elementary. She has been employed by Lawrence Public Schools since the 1990’s. Lisa has worked in multiple positions within the district. She started as a homebound high school teacher for a student who had muscular dystrophy, then became a Speech and Language Pathologist Paraeducator. In 2003, she became a resource Paraeducator where she continues to impact the lives of many students and staff today.
One of her peers wrote, “Through her years of service and by her compassionate nature, Lisa has become the go-to person for all students; academically, socially, and emotionally. Throughout the years, Lisa has developed innate strategies to best support students, such as creating a safe space to let guards down, actively listening to and validating experiences, and working creatively to engage students academically. Lisa has spent decades becoming the best advocate for students.”
Here’s what some of the students had to say:
“You are the best teacher ever. You help me with my math and make it easier.”
“You make learning really fun.”
“You are the greatest person ever and I love you so much. You are very friendly to all the people in our school and you are the best para in the world!”
Congratulations Ms. Maziar!
The A.C.E Award recognizes and applauds classified employees whose efforts benefit students, faculty and staff, and others within and outside the USD 497 community. Students, faculty, classified and administrative staff may nominate any permanent part-time or full-time classified employee and awards are presented each fall and each spring.

Optional: Learner Profile for Student Placement 2022-23
Deerfield Elementary uses academic, behavioral and social-emotional data in a collaborative process among teachers to place students in class sections for the following school year. Our goal is to achieve the best possible balance for each class within a grade level. As a reminder Deerfield does not accept requests for specific teachers, nor are students automatically assigned to a teacher the family has had in the past. Additionally, we will not accept requests to be placed with specific classmates. Class placements for the 22-23 school year will be made public the first week of August.
However, you may provide us with information about your child for our consideration in this process by completing the Learner Profile form below. The information you provide to us is appreciated and serves as supplemental information in our process to achieve the desired balance. Please use the link below if you wish to provide us with additional information.

Upcoming Donation Opportunities
Planning is underway for Teacher & Staff Appreciation week, which will include a pizza lunch provided by Toppers, a Breakfast (burritos) of Champions breakfast, snack bags, sweet treats from McLain’s Market, and ending with a happy hour at the Salty Iguana. If you’re interested in donating to help PTO put on these events, please turn in money to the office with the envelope marked “PTO-Teacher & Staff Appreciation.” You can also Venmo @Ashley-All.
Be on the lookout for fliers requesting the annual $3 party donation. In the past, PTO has collected the funds to help offset the costs of class parties, with any reserve funds set aside for that grade’s Fifth Grade Recognition. Because we have not collected donations since 2019 (and some grades are behind in Fifth Grade Recognition funds), we will be asking for the donations in April. Thank you for supporting student parties and grade recognitions.
