Term 1 Week 9 2019
Nau mai Haere mai Welcome ~ Sarah Morris, Principal
Choose Kind
Choose Kind is a simple statement that can have a huge impact on our community. Simple acts can make such a difference, so I thank you for the smiles for each other, waves, words of appreciation, and for the meals provided for some families in the past weeks. We encourage our learners to have respect for one another, to live with integrity and to look after our world around us. Last week our staff sat together for 2 minutes of silent reflection at lunchtime, and listened to the joy of our children in the playground.
Frankley School Teacher Only Day - Monday 27 May - Week 5 Term 2
We have one teacher only day this year at Frankley School. Our staff will be working with Bek Galloway. She is in the school for 2 days in the last week of this term and then will work with our staff for a full day in May. We are focusing on improving literacy outcomes through Play Based Learning, Wildly Important Tasks and Passion Projects. Bek will lead our professional learning and goal setting in this area. Bek works nationally and internationally so we are lucky to have the opportunity to collaborate with her. She comes highly recommended by Mark Osborne who has worked with Frankley school in the past: staff and families, and is currently working with our school leadership team. Our professional learning is funded through Centrally Funded Professional Learning Development (Ministry of Education) as we submitted an application that was successful at the end of 2018.
Seesaw at Frankley School
We have introduced Seesaw at Frankley school as a tool to support children to share their learning and experiences directly with their family. Your child’s hub teachers may have already sent out instructions or they won’t be too far away. Here are a few main points we have written as a staff:
Through using Seesaw students will be able to:
Share their learning with families
Actively act as responsible online digital citizens
Learn about staying safe online
Develop and use the language of learning through sharing not only finished products but the process of learning too
Understand and use the co-constructed criteria to support robust posting of learning
Make good choices around what they wish to post on their site and justify their decisions (age appropriate)
The frequency of posting can vary between students. Teachers will use opportunities within Seesaw to enhance the cross competency skills and key attitudes
Supporting Digital Citizenship:
Students will learn about Common Creatives and apply this knowledge when selecting digital content off the internet
Students will develop an understanding of why we must consult before posting images of others and follow this practice
Students will learn about their digital tattoo and the significance of this when posting online within Seesaw
Students will develop an awareness of commenting online and the correct protocols that go with this
Students will be supported to understand what personal information should not be shared online
Students will develop an awareness of a wider audience when posting online and the need to consider this when posting on their Seesaw Journal
Tommorrow's Schools Review
Bali Haque - Chairperson of the Taskforce for the Tomorrow's Schools Review has agreed to facilitate an additional meeting in New Plymouth for principals, teachers, support staff, MoE: LS and any interested parents.
If you would like to have your say in the largest proposals for educational change since the introduction of Tomorrows Schools in 1990, then this is your opportunity to influence any proposed changes to our education system. It's vitally important that we have the voices of everyone reflected in any proposed changes.
Please see the attached invite flyer containing the link to RSVP. Refreshments will be provided. For further information please click here

I AM HOPE - GUMBOOT FRIDAY
Frankley School 5 April 2019
I AM HOPE is the youth and community focused support group run by the The Key to Life Charitable Trust, started by Mike King.
#iamhope has launched Gumboot Friday #GumbootUpNZ!! which is a fun way to raise money for kids mental health. #iamhope explains the idea behind the Gumboot campaign: " having depression is like walking through mud every day." So on the 5th April 2019, they are asking for anyone and everyone possible to show their support. What we are doing?
Frankley School will be encouraging our students to participate in our ‘Gumboot Friday. This links well to our Frankley School attitudes of persistence and empathy as well as the need to help grow resilience in learners. Recent events in NZ have shown how events can have a ripple effect and we want to encourage our children and communities to seek support and help when needed. During the day each learning hub will participate in a gumboot throwing competition. We will also be placing a donation gumboot by the office and taking the gumboot around our classrooms and have them at the gate at the end of the day. We hope that our community is able to support this cause through a donation - however big or small. Throw a gold coin in the gummy and help support Kids of NZ!!!
If you go to their website link below you can find out the many options for making a donation to this fantastic fundraiser.
