TUMUAKI KŌRERO

The school continues to be a busy place, and after the disruptive start of the school year it is pleasing to see our learners hard at work in their classes. Kōwhai, Mānuka, and Tōtara teams had a fantastic time at school camp with many new learning opportunities, challenging themselves and forming many friendships. Rātā and Rimu teams will be attending camp on the week of the 27 March, and we are sure it will be another great week. Thank you to those parents who attend these camps. Without your support, it would not be possible to run our camps.

The new AstroTurf is now complete on the netball courts and looks fantastic. It has been great to see classes and learners using it regularly during the day and the community using it after hours. A huge thanks to Pub Charity Ltd and The Lion Foundation for their significant contributions to making this project possible.

On Wednesday, 5 April, the teachers are inviting parents/caregivers to attend a 10-minute meeting time to discuss each learner’s progress to date. These meetings are from 3.20 pm - 8.50 pm. We invite you also to visit the Specialist classrooms and ESOL to meet the staff and talk about these programmes. We have limited parking available on our school basketball courts, so we encourage you to use the Barfoot and Thompson Netball Court parking and Smales Farm.

Please click this link and use the access code 2285p to book a meeting time with your child’s teacher.

The TNIS Way is a set of values that underpins what we do at TNIS and drives our school culture. These values are:

  • A Safe Learning Environment

  • Effective Learning Interactions

  • Well-being

  • Everyone is a Learner

  • Reflective Practice

  • Caring for Others

  • Working Together

  • Respect for Others

  • Relationships

  • Affirming Learners' Culture.

Teachers always refer to these in the classroom and in the school grounds.

Unfortunately, we are noticing a number of learners who are not following these values. Sadly, this includes using racial language, gender comments, name-calling, and general put-downs. This behaviour will not be tolerated at TNIS and will be acted upon swiftly.

Teachers, learners and parents have also commented about the rise in the use of swearing in the playground. We understand that swear words are much more widely accepted in communities these days, and of course, in certain circumstances, when learners are badly hurt or upset, they may resort to swearing. However, we are hearing swearing used for no significant reason other than, we believe, to intimidate others or show a level of risk-taking behaviour. We will continue to address this with learners when we hear it and ask that you also support us in talking to your child about this issue.

Part of ensuring that our school is a safe learning environment is all learners understanding that like any workplace, we must show respect and consideration to everyone by using kind language.

E kore tātau e mōhio ki te waitohu nui o te wai kia mimiti rawa te puna - We never know the worth of water until the well runs dry (Look after the planet before it is too late).

Ngā mihi nui

Year 7 & 8 school-based immunisation programme 2023

Year 7 students will be offered Boostrix vaccine (Tdap) in school. This vaccine is a booster of tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough (pertussis). Most children received these immunisations as pre-schoolers. This is scheduled for July 20th with a catchup date 1-2 weeks later for absent students.

Year 8 students will be offered the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in school. This New Zealand scheduled vaccine is recommended to be given at 12 years of age. Students need two doses with a 6-month gap between doses 1 and 2. This is scheduled for May 31st with a catchup date 1-2 weeks later for absent students.

Information on the vaccine and a consent form will be sent home with your child. Please complete the form and return it to the school

If you would like more information on this important immunisation programme, please go to the School Immunisations page.

The Resilience Project

At TNIS, we utilise The Resilience Programme (TRP) within our school. Each week learners will do 1-2 lessons in their classroom. Each week we will explain different aspects of TRP. That way, you are able to talk to your child about this programme and their learning.
