Principal Message
Kia ora koutou Witherlea whānau,
The first two weeks of school this term have flown by and we have welcomed more students into our Witherlea flock. From feedback from parents these students are making friends, getting into the swing of Witherlea life and trying to follow our Motto: Be Kind, Be Safe, Be Fair. The other students make wonderful role models be sure to check out the Be Kind, Be Safe, Be Fair Shoutouts - all of these students go into the draw for lunch with the principal at the end of term.
The term started with the Ferns going off to the stadium for Fundamentals. The children were so proud of their efforts and in particular, the WATER where they challenged themselves with water safety activities led by the instructors who are experts at what they do. Such a valuable resource we have in Marlborough.
Last week Punga Team headed off to the Stadium with their team and this week is half of Kowhai; Room 15 and Room 18. We know they will enjoy the experience and the learning in the small group setting.
In other news the Subway lunches have been a real hit and our student leaders: WitherLeads have been integral in the organisation, set up and smooth running on a Friday. Please make sure you tell your children if you have purchased their lunch as we are still having to hand-deliver to a few 'shocked but happy' children.
WET WEATHER
The wet weather is really starting to set in so it is important that children have the school issue polar fleece. If they come in any other jacket/jersey it can be worn to and from school but not AT school. We are a uniform school and the second-hand shop now operates at 3pm on a Tuesday out of Room 20; down in the village.
A raincoat is also handy because if the rain is light children can still play outside but only if they have jackets.
LEARNING
Mr Funnell and Ms Harnett are loving the time they get to pop into classes to check on our learning environments, the Pillar in action, 'walls that talk' and seeing the wonderful teaching and learning programmes. We do this regularly on a Monday and then we let all the other teachers know of the great things happening that we see, like;
- Mrs Walkenhorst and Room17 connecting with a class in South Korea (see photo)
- Mr Robertson has been working with the Green Ninja's our environmental team and the Science Fair group on a Wednesday (see photos)
- Mrs Muir has flipped the GeoCity on the side and put it up the wall - this time it is all about the school rather than a city
- Mr Stephen's wellbeing board at the beginning of the school day
- Ms Ives's Whare Tapa Whā wall - showing the Pillar = this is also across the Kowhai team
- The Ferns Team and their Play-Based Learning programme supporting learners to settle into school
- Kauri Team using Banquer to teach financial literacy and employment
We have so many amazing things happening across the school. Be sure to pop into your children's classes and check them out while also connecting with your teacher as this relationship is as important as the learner-teacher relationship which supports success at school.
We will be sending out a Health and Wellbeing Survey to our community regarding what needs you believe we could address using our Life Education Bus. The programme outline will be part of this survey as well as an expression of interest for our Wellbeing Team that needs representation from all stakeholders; teachers, leaders, BOT and, whānau and students.

We were busy in the forest last term. We did a big clean-up and reorganised a few things including; picking up rubbish, sweeping up leaves ( to create mulch for the young trees and places for the bugs to live). We also made a new path and brought in some old rotting logs that will make great homes for all sorts of insects.
Nau mai ki te kura o Witherlea
We wish to welcome these new students and their families and whānau to our school and community;

Early Words Recognition
Alexandra M, Theo S
We are very proud of the effort towards learning that our youngest students put in as the Early Words is the start of mastery at Witherlea School.
Subway Lunches
This term we are trialling the Subway in Schools Lunch Programme. This enables caregivers to order their children a Subway lunch which will be delivered to school. The process is ONLINE and is between families and Subway - this eliminates any administration and/or money exchange for the school.
Our Subway lunches will be on Fridays beginning Friday 7th May. The menu is a limited menu designed specifically for schools and prices start from $4.50.
Orders must be placed before 8.45am via Subway Express on a Friday morning and will be delivered to school for our 1pm lunchtime.
Subway can only accept credit card purchases. See the attached flyer for more information.
Please note that Subway lunches are unable to be ordered if a school trip or event falls on a
Friday.
