Learning About Poetry Slams

Poetry slams are competitive events where poets perform their work and are judged by the audience. Cozad High School, in conjunction with Wilson Public Library, will be hosting three internationally known performance poets who will be on hand to explain poetry slams, answer questions, and read their poetry. Students interested in performing their own works should contact Beth Carver at Cozad High School at (308)- 784-2744.
This tour is organized by the nonprofit Nebraska Writers Collective with support from Humanities Nebraska.
Nebraska native Matt Mason ...has won a Pushcart Prize and two Nebraska Book Awards. A finalist for the position of Nebraska State Poet, his works have been published in over 150 magazines. He is the executive director of the Nebraska Writers Collective and is a consultant for the Nebraska Arts Council. Matt lives in Omaha and organizes Poetry Slams all over the world. | Dasha Kelly ...has been a national motivational speaker for many years. She has performed on HBO’s Def Poetry Jam and has had her works published in anthologies, textbooks, magazines and online. Dasha has also traveled to Africa as an Art Envoy for the U.S. Embassy. | Danny Solis ... is an international poetry slam champion and was the winner of the first poetry slam in 2011. He was one of three poets chosen by the U.S. State Department to go to Africa and perform his poetry. He has been organizing poetry slams for over thirty years. |
