Mohegan Weekly Update 9/16

September 16 Update

Happy Friday, everyone! Our students completed their first full week of school. By now, most of the bus routes have fallen into a routine. Parent drop off and pick up have been moving smoothly. As a reminder, if you are picking up a child at school, please have an ID. Not all staff members recognize parent faces or cars all the time. Our top priority is your child's safety and checking IDs is a way to ensure the correct child is getting picked up. Thank you for your understanding.

Also, parent drop off is from 8:45-9:00 daily. At 9:00, the back entrance doors will close as long as there are no more cars. If you are stuck in a line, we will allow your child to enter the building. But if there is no line, the doors will shut at 9:00 and you will need to bring your child to the office for a tardy slip.

Beginning of the year testing has begun. This week and next week, all students in grades K-4 will take the NWEA assessment in Reading and Math. This provides our teachers with baseline data and provides a snapshot of where students are academically after the summer. Students will take this test again in the winter and a third time in the spring to see how they have grown during the course of the year. Students are not timed on the assessment and take it over multiple days to prevent burn out.

SBA scores for last year's 3rd graders (this year's 4th graders) are in. They will be sent home on Wednesday, September 21 so be on the look out for those papers.

All students can get FREE breakfast and lunch through October 31st. Starting November 1st, students will need to pay for breakfast and lunch. Some families may qualify for Free or Reduced Lunch prices.

Applications for Free and Reduced Lunch can be found at this website:

If you would like a hard copy of the application, please contact the secretaries in the main office. Please get applications in soon so that when November 1st arrives, you will know in advance if you qualify for the program. Students can always bring their own lunch from home. Remember that we are a nut free school.

Back to School Night at Mohegan Elementary School is Thursday, September 29 beginning at 6:00PM. Doors will not open before 5:50. When you arrive, you can go directly to your child's class. Classroom teachers will have 2 sessions: 6:00-6:25 and 6:30-6:55. You can choose which time works for you, or go to different teachers if you have multiple children in the school. If you have 3 children at the school... you will have to divide and conquer!

Back to School Night is a great opportunity to meet your child's teacher in person. You will learn about class routines and expectations, curriculum, and communication procedures. We ask that this is an adult only event. It is NOT the time for individual conferences. Please set up an appointment with the teacher if you have questions specific to your child. You can also sign up for PTO and meet some community groups who will have tables set up in our lobby.

Our Book Fair for students is coming SEP 27-SEP 30. Students will have 2 time slots at the book fair: one day to browse books and another day to buy books.

The PTO has two fliers attached below. One is regarding PTO membership, and the other is regarding room parent sponsors.

Picture Day is coming October 4th. Attached is a copy of the flier that was sent home this week.

Please see the attached fliers regarding community sign ups for basketball programs.

Enjoy your weekend and we will see everyone on Monday.
