Osteoporosis is a medical condition/disease that affects over 1 million Australians. It makes bones brittle which means a higher risk of breakage in your bones. Osteoporosis occurs when bones lose minerals and vitamins (calcium) quicker than the body can replace them, causing loss of bone density, mass or thickness.

- Low calcium intake
- Low vitamin D levels
- Corticosteroids
- Low hormone levels
- Thyroid conditions
- Conditions leading to malabsorption
- Some chronic diseases
- Some medicines for breast cancer, prostate cancer, epilepsy and some antidepressants
- Low levels of physical activity
