Extended Learning Opportunities (ELO) Beginning This Week (Thursday, May 13th)
Your child's classroom teacher sent the communication below last Friday. We are so excited to offer some extended learning opportunities before or after school for our students.
If you want to take advantage of this opportunity, please read the article below and be sure to follow the "next steps" by or before the end of the day on Tuesday, May 11th.
Doherty Family,
We have exciting news for you. We will be offering Extended Learning Opportunities (ELO) for any families currently attending the half day hybrid instructional model. The process for beginning the Extended Learning Opportunity will begin the week of May 10th. Please continue reading to find out more about the framework for this opportunity, as well as what you need to do to ensure a smooth transition into this opportunity.
Framework/How The Extended Learning Opportunity Will Work
Days Offered. This will be offered Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.
ELO #1. Your child may attend before school learning from 7:10 AM to 8:20 AM (note: start time may be slightly earlier, depending on logistics/numbers). **Note--if your child is PM cohort, he/she will need to be picked up by 8:20 AM (unless enrolled in Cloud Care). Then, he/she can return to class for Cohort B.
ELO #2. Your child may attend after school learning from 3:30 to 4:40 PM (note: start time may abe slightly later, depending on logistics/numbers). **Note--If your child is in the AM cohort, he/she will need to go home and then return for this opportunity at 3:30 PM (unless enrolled in Cloud Care).
No District Transportation for ELO. There will be no district transportation available to school if your child attends the before school opportunity. Similarly, there will be no district transportation available home from school if your child attends the after school opportunity.
Free. This opportunity is free and will be facilitated by\ certified teachers on staff.
Program Objective. The goal of ELO is to offer personalized enrichment and support opportunities in order to ensure a strong finish to the year.
Next Steps Required
By or Before Tuesday, May 11th: Email Classroom Teacher and let him/her know the following:
Times. What times will you want your child to attend? Before or After School.
Be Ready To Begin Once You Hear From Us. We will confirm times, report locations, and teacher assignments via email once we hear your plans.
FAQ’s
Why are you offering these opportunities?
As our county and state vaccination rates increase and COVID-19 related cases decrease, our Board of Education and members of our district leadership team have been hard at work establishing additional learning opportunities for families as we look to finish the 2020-21 school year on a high note. We are excited to share the following information created through the collaborative spirit that makes our school district unique.
We are proud of the work our students and staff have done this year. These Extended Learning Opportunities will allow for a strong end of the 2020-21 school year as we look forward to even bigger and brighter things in 2021-22.
Will you follow COVID safety guidelines?
We will be able to safely offer these extended academic instructional supports for students within our hybrid model making full use of the mitigation strategies that have allowed us to be successful during the current school year. This will include masks and social distancing.
If my child is in Lakers Online, can he/she show up for this opportunity?
Yes. All Lakers Online K-2 students that choose to take advantage of ELO will attend at Doherty. All Lakers Online 3-5 students that choose to take advantage of ELO will attend at Sheiko. However, he/she would only be allowed to attend during the ELO time slots, and they should attend at their home building.
If my child is a Cohort B student, and I want him/her to attend the Before School option, will I have to pick him up at 8:20 AM?
Cloud Care and Kids Klub is still available for all families that have signed up. However, unless you already have Cloud Care arrangements, you will be required to pick your child up in this scenario. In other words, we will not be offering supervision of your child when he/she is not assigned to a classroom in our hybrid model.
How long will you be offering these opportunities?
Once you make your commitment, we will contact you to get started. The final day of ELO will be June 8th.
Is the entire district offering these opportunities?
Yes.
What if my child has to miss one of the days for which I’ve committed him/her?
Things happen and plans change from time to time. We understand that. If your child is going to miss a day to which you’ve committed, please email the main office staff and his/her ELO teacher.
Will my child be assigned to his/her current teacher?
When possible and if your child’s teacher volunteers to lead an ELO session, then your child will more than likely be assigned to his/her current teacher. We are actually in the process of staffing ELO as we speak.
What is the difference between ELO and Cloud Care?
There are two big differences between ELO and Cloud Care: the time period in which it takes place and access to a certified teacher for personalized instruction.
Time Period. Cloud Care takes place during the school day, when kids are not attending their cohort classroom instruction. Extended Learning Opportunities (ELO) only take place before the start of the school day (7:10-8:20 AM) and after the end of the school day (3:30-4:40 PM).
Personalized Instruction. During ELO, children will have access to a certified teacher that will provide personalized instruction that will meet the child at their current level of understanding. During this time, the teacher will work with small groups or individuals to provide that personalized instruction. Meanwhile, the other children will engage in enrichment activities, have opportunities to complete their Canvas activities, engage in independent reading, etc. The teacher is not leading full class instruction or delivering a new curriculum. If the ELO teacher is not your child’s current classroom teacher, he/she will be provided with some focus areas from your child’s teacher. These points of focus will prove to be helpful for personalized support.

Happy Mother's Day
Thank You for an Amazing Teacher Appreciation Week
As always, our Doherty PTO did a phenomenal job leading the charge. And, as always, our Doherty Families did an amazing job stepping up to the plate. Thank you!
Thank You For Voting!
You may already be aware. However, the West Bloomfield School District had a successful election last week with 75% of the votes being cast "YES" in favor of our millage! Thank you for taking the time to vote last week!
With approval from our community, we have restored our operating millage back to the full 18 mills originally approved by our community back in 2014. This will generate an additional $691,000 to the General Fund beginning next school year. Moving forward, the ability to levy the full 18 mill operating millage annually is extremely important to our ability to financially support district programs.
I am so proud to be a part of the WB team. This community's support for its schools is second to none, and I am grateful for your continued efforts to advocate on behalf of our students, staff and families. West Bloomfield is truly a wonderful place to live, work and play. Thanks to your efforts, we can ensure our district has the resources necessary to make our dreams a reality.

Reminder: Keeping Our Kids Safe with Clear Dismissal Change Notifications
Keeping our kids safe is our number one priority. In order to ensure that we achieve this priority, every single day, we need timely and clear communication whenever your child's dismissal plans change.
Email notification 24 hours in advance of a dismissal change is critical if we are to ensure that your child gets to the proper place at dismissal. When emailing us about dismissal changes, please be sure to ALWAYS include the following people:
- Your child's classroom teacher
- Michelle Rudelic at michelle.rudelic@wbsd.org and Stephanie Faulkender at stephanie.faulkender@wbsd.org (our administrative assistants).
- If your child attends Kids Klub or Cloud Care, Beth Helka at bethany.helka@wbsd.org or via phone at 248-865-6468
If you dismissal plans change and your are not able to give us 24 hour notice via email, please be sure to contact the main office to let Michelle or Stephanie know. However, we ask that you do your very best to avoid doing this. Last minute dismissal changes are very difficult to communicate to all necessary parties.
