A Request from Fr. Matthew DeForest

(His original/lengthier note was also placed on the STM Parent Facebook page. This has been edited down for today's blast.)

Dear Friends,

I'm writing one week before Christmas to ask for your help - if you are able - to help two families in our parish see the Light. They both have reached out confidentially to us looking for help to celebrate Christmas for their families and children. I know it's short notice and no doubt, you've got plenty on your plates already, but if you are able to help I know they would exceedingly grateful - most especially for their children whom they desperately want to see with light-filled eyes when they realize that Jesus has come to them.

Please let me know if you're able to help. Nothing will be turned away. Food for Christmas and beyond is needed. Gift cards to Giant and Safeway are an option for food (this way they can get perishable items as well), but nonperishable items are needed, as well. For clothes and toys, etc. Target gift cards are a great idea - I suppose even for food, but I'm not sure whether they can stretch a dollar more at Giant/Safeway or Target in regards to food.

Family #1
Mom and Dad, 1 young daughter and 1 toddler son
Parents wanted to get a few family board games for to play together, like Connect Four, Jenga, Sorry, etc. [Daughter] has asked for a sewing machine and boots (I'm not sure if these are snow boots, or something like Uggs - both couldn't hurt! but really needs clothes. [Coat , gloves and a hat. She needs jeans and tops and undergarments]. For jeans and pants at Old Navy she’s a 0 but for all other stores she’s a 12/14 girls. For tops she’s a large in girls. I'm not sure of the young boy's sizes, but he could use cloths, as well.
[Toddler] really likes music and anything that makes noise. And also one of those big developmental blocks the has knobs and spirals twisty things and counting beads. His doctor says that he really needs to strengthen his small motor skills and also some puzzles.

Family #2
Mom and Dad, 1 daughter and 1 son (these kids are older)Girl is an extra small in most things and a 0 in pants/shorts. Her shoe size is 6.5. The young man is a 34x30 pants size and a medium in shirts/sweatshirts.

I'm hoping that we can have everything together by next Monday (December 22) so that we can get it to the families and that they can wrap everything before Christmas so that Santa can make it down the chimney in time! (If anyone has extra wrapping paper, that would be a big help, too!)

I am most grateful to anyone who is able to help - even just a little bit. If anyone has questions or I can help in any way, please don't hesitate to call (703) 525-1300 or shoot me an email at

Let there be light! Thank you - each of you who are reading this and letting it tug at your heart - thank you!

Fr. Matthew DeForest

As the year draws to a close, many of you will be making charitable contributions to help reduce your tax bill. When you decide on charities this year, please consider making a 100% tax deductible donation to the school’s Annual Appeal. (Remember, half of what you give goes towards our teachers, the other half towards making this facility a reality). You can do so using the following link:
