Welcome to the Fifth Grade Cafe
Writing
This week in writing we started working on improving our lead and revising and editing our pieces! We talked about paragraphing and formatting.
Reading
In reading, we held debates focused on deeper thinking about our reading. We first held a debate using our read aloud, Because of Mr. Terupt. The kids had to decide who was at fault for the snowball incident in the story. It was awesome! Ask your child about it. After using the class read aloud, the kids found a debatable issue within their book club books and took a position to defend! They had to come up with reasons and evidence, then rank the evidence to best support their thinking. They really worked hard and held a successful debate.
Math
We wrapped up Module 1 of math this week by practicing our division of decimals. We also reviewed our addition, subtraction, and multiplication of decimals. The students should have come home with a worksheet to practice applying these skills in word problems. They also have an answer sheet to look at if they would like to study for next Monday's assessment.
