Student Spotlight; Zeynep O. (Where Do You See Yourself In 20 Years, An Essay)
Dear future self,
It is essential to plan and be proactive in the future. Even though you enjoyed living in the present, your past self occasionally thought about the past and the future. In the past, you lived while discovering your identity. Instead of living in isolation and doubt, you gifted yourself to the world while trying new things, detailing your habits, and progressing towards hard work. Looking in the future also helps you discover the plans you needed to enact in the present. In 2 years, you saw yourself starting college with a fresh new mind. In 6 years, you saw yourself still in school. What about in 20 years?
In 20 years, you are still learning. You are 36 and a full-grown adult. You are probably listening to a freshman in high school rant about the classes, grades, and the mean stuff the teacher did at school. You are teaching your kid the basics of life while cooking food for the family. You are opening the textbooks and reading. You are in a beautiful country where I have always wanted to live.
Right now, I do not know who the freshman is, what you are studying, which book you are reading, or which beautiful country you live in. Right now, I know I want to keep learning, studying, and gaining experience until my last breath. Thinking about the future barely changes my schedule for the present. I will live like every day is the last day. I will work hard smartly.
In 20 years, I am learning and I am happy.

Zeynep Ozdemir 20 years ago

Poetry Out Loud 2020
".... I had the honor to attend the Fulton Science Academy Private School Poetry Out Loud Competition as a judge. It was amazing to sit at the judge's panel with award winning journalist Derek Prall and the Academy's esteem educators!Watching those young people stand before their peers to perform their recitations was something special to behold! It was a high honor to stand and address them and their families! I dared not take that responsibility lightly!I salute the winners of the competition and all the students that participated fearlessly! I would also like to thank Ms. Kelley Outler the wonderful hospitality and providing this opportunity for us all!The winner of the evening ask me to put my address in a place where he could read it again and share with his family! This is for him and all the other young poets in the room! Congratulations" - Teresa K. Page

Starbucks Foundation Service Fellows: A Mission Put Into Action
There is no doubt that hunger and poverty plague all parts of the world, but here at Hands On Atlanta, we make it our mission to mobilize the Atlanta community to tackle our city’s most pressing needs - providing opportunities to help serve the thousands of families who are in need of food and other essential resources. Each year, an estimate of 755,400 (1 in 7) people in Georgia turn to Food Bank partner agencies for food. 1 in 5 kids in Georgia live in food-insecure households. While we can’t solve all of the hunger problems facing our community, thanks to an impactful partnership with the Starbucks Foundation, Points of Light, and the Atlanta Community Food Bank, we’re now able to get more food to those in need.
Towards the end of May 2019, The Starbucks Foundation and Points of Light announced the expansion of the Starbucks Foundation Service Fellow Program, following a successful six-month pilot in 2018. As a result of the good news, we were able to welcome two new members to the Hands On Atlanta team, Shelly Banks and Steen Stuckey in September of 2019!
Here’s how the program works
The goal of the Starbucks Foundation Service Fellow Program will do 2 things:
Enable local food pantries to provide more food to those in need.
Provide the Starbucks Foundation Service Fellows a unique opportunity to address a pressing community need.
The Starbucks Foundation Service Fellows work 20 hours in their store, while spending another 20 hours with Hands On Atlanta, helping build volunteer capacity at Atlanta Community Food Bank affiliate food pantries.
Shelly and Steen will provide training and consultation on volunteer management to 8 food pantries around metro Atlanta. Stretching from Lithonia to Newnan, more people will have access to more food, thanks to the help of their work! By helping the food pantries better engage volunteers in serving more food to their clients, our amazing fellows (Steen and Shelly) are tackling one of Starbucks’ global social impact priorities: hunger.
