PIErate SHOWDOWN
With the help of JPP and your generosity we continue to raise funds for our playground this year. Our goal is to raise funds for the surface. We do have a few fundraisers planned to help get the best of the best playground. A rubberized surface is just as expensive as the equipment. Instead of doing the candy cane challenge this month, we decided to do a PIE-rate SHOWDOWN. Donations can be given in the form of change or bills and below are the different challenges we are presenting to the students. When you make donations for the specific day you earn chances to nominate staff members who you think should get PIED. The top THREE high school & elementary teachers with the most nominations will be PIED by the top three 6th & 7th grade pie sellers. This is a two week challenge. Our goal is to raise more than we did last year with the candy cane challenge–$1512.74.
December 5th & 6th: This event is guaranteed to make you laugh- bring in money and get a laffy taffy
December 7th & 8th: Are we going to pie a HErSHE(y)? Bring in Pennies or dollar bills that day and get a ‘Hershey’ bar (little one)
December 9th & 12th: Bring in money that day to have it count as double the points towards that teacher- get double bubble gum
December 13th & 14th: Teachers wish this event was after payday to try to save themselves- Bring in dollar bills and get a payday candy bar (little one)
December 15th & 16th: If you bring in silver to save a teacher, you could get ‘lifesavers’
FOR EVERY DOLLAR DONATION/HANDFUL OF CHANGE YOU WILL HAVE THE CHANCE TO NOMINATE A TEACHER. For every $5 donation you will have a chance to SAVE a teacher. Students will have the opportunity to turn money in at the beginning of the day each day and watch to see which teachers will be PIED on December 22nd. All Plainview Public School staff are included in the PIE-rate SHOWDOWN. If you have any questions please reach out to the teachers or the JPP team members (Kristina Richter, Ann Spulak, Megan Porter, Bernice Yilk, Amanda Baird, Marie Peter, Melissa Jacot or Jen Hodson).
Gearing Up for Christmas Vacation!
The week before Christmas break can sometimes be a bit confusing, so we want to make sure that everyone is clear on the schedule! Please note - this schedule is for the elementary building. The schedule for the JH/HS building may look different!
LATE BUS ARRIVAL
Sometimes because of the road conditions the buses arrive later than usual. Please assure your child(ren) that they may still eat school breakfast if they so desire. They will not be considered tardy. Students must let us know that they want breakfast though. Otherwise we will not know.
Learning Continues During Non-School Days:
With the vacation days approaching it is important that students keep reading and working on math. I recommend at least 20 minutes of reading and 10-15 minutes of math. These times can be broken up throughout the day, but are so important to ensure that students do not lose the progress that has been made throughout the school year so far.
Ways to Incorporate Reading:
Set 10 minutes aside to read a short story with your child before bed.
Always have a book handy in the car or book bag so when you are driving somewhere or waiting for an appointment your child will have access to reading material.
Have your child create a grocery list and read it while shopping.
Play board games with your child and have them read the game cards.
Go for a walk (if Mother Nature or Jack Frost allow) and read the signs you see or create your own treasure hunt with clue cards.
Ways to Incorporate Math:
Practice flashcards (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division can be made OR printed online).
Have your child help with measuring for cooking and baking.
Grab the paper & cut out ads. They can then add up prices and make a budget for a shopping trip!
Grab a map and have your child pick their dream destination. They can then add up the mileage to get there and back. Some bonus math would be figuring the price of gas to get the family there and back.
Play board games or grab a deck of cards and play war. Number sense is HUGE in math and war makes you determine if your card is greater or lesser. Remember - make your child do the work!
Medication While at School
Please use the “authorization of medication at school” form that was mailed to each family at the beginning of the school year if your child needs to take meds during the school day. If you do not have one, please let Tracy know and she can send one home with your child or you can go to the school website to find one and print it out. Go to “Nurse’s Corner “ to find the form. Meds can not legally be dispensed unless we have a signed authorization form.
Report Cards
Our first semester ends on December 22nd. Report cards, NSCAS & MAP data will be sent home or mailed on the last day of school. Please contact the office if you do not receive one.
School Cancellations & Early Dismissals
School cancellations, late starts, and/or early releases will be announced via the phone messaging system and also on the following radio stations: KNEN, Norfolk, KEXL/WJAG-Norfolk and WNAX-Yankton. If no report is heard, it can be assumed that school will be in session. Now is a great time to make sure that the school has accurate and up-to-date phone numbers for you. Please call Tracy to check your contact information if your number has recently changed.
While it is never an ideal situation, there are times that school may need to be released early due to an impending storm. Please take some time to develop a plan for your children to follow if school is ever released early for in-climate weather.
Brrr....It’s Cold Outside!
Please make sure that your child(ren) is/are dressed appropriately when they come to school. Some of the children, especially the older ones, are not dressed warmly enough to go out for recess. We will be going outside if the ‘feels like’ temperature is 10 degrees or above.
In those cold temperatures, students need hats, gloves, scarves, boots and snow pants on snowy days along with a warm, thick jacket. Two or three sweatshirts is not enough in these temperatures.
Christmas Program Reminders
We are excited to present the Pre–6 Christmas Program to you on Thursday, December 15 at 7:00pm. Please dress nice for the program and plan to stay for the entire show.
