Covid Communication Protocol
We wanted to touch base about the protocol for sharing information with families if/when there is a positive COVID case with either a staff member or student in our school. If a student or staff member is confirmed to test positive, we report that information to our local health department and our school nurse. A thorough investigation of the situation will occur to determine if contact tracing is necessary based on a number of factors, including when the person became contagious. This is all vetted through the partnership with school and local health officials. If contact tracing is necessary, we determine who the student or staff member was in close contact with over that period of time. If someone is considered to be a close contact, the family is immediately called and recommendations are made re: next steps. All other students in the class who were not considered a close contact, will also be notified of the situation. In addition, for each incident that occurs, I, as principal, will send out an email to the entire school community to let you know that someone has tested positive in our school and that close contacts have been contacted.
In addition, if a student is sent home with covid-like symptoms, we will notify each of the families from that class. If we learn that the student tests positive, we will follow the communication protocol shared above.
We are really proud of the mitigation procedures at our school and appreciate the continued vigilance and support of our families in keeping everyone safe. We will continue to keep you apprised of any health concerns through our WES Health Updates.

Dear Woodbrook Families,
Thank you to all who were able to join us this past Friday evening for the “We Are WES” virtual talent show. At last night’s School Board meeting, Dr. Haas officially presented his recommendations for the 2021-2022 school year. On June 1st, parents will be asked to submit their intent as to whether your child will return to school in person or remain virtual. We would like to host a WES Community Conversation on Monday, May 17th to address any questions you may have and support you in this important decision. It is our hope that 100% of Woodbrook students will return in person and want to be able to share our plans for keeping everyone safe. If you are unable to join this Community Conversation and have questions or concerns about next year, please reach out to us. We are happy to talk with you, provide a school tour, and answer any questions you may have with regards to safety and what schol will look like in 21-22.

Dear Woodbrook Families,
As a reminder, the Parent Portal will open this Monday, April 26th by 4:00pm for parents to view their child’s 3rd quarter report card. This past Tuesday, we hosted a WES Community Conversation and answered questions about SOL testing, Summer School opportunities, and what families can expect for the 21-22 school year. Below are links to the slide presentation that was shared with families. Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions as we move into the final quarter of the current school year.
Albemarle County will be offering summer school learning opportunities for all students in the month of July. You should have received an email from the school division inquiring about your interest in attending summer school which asked for your preferences regarding days and session times that work best for your child. If you have not completed the survey within that email please do so as soon as possible as it provides necessary information for planning and staffing purposes. We greatly appreciate your attention to this. More information will be sent out through your child’s teacher in the coming weeks.
Attention parents/guardians of our 3rd-5th grade VIRTUAL students… By now, you should have received a letter from the school explaining your child’s options for SOL testing this year. Included in the letter was a form for you to complete along with a self-addressed stamped envelope. If you have not completed and returned this form yet or perhaps did not receive it, please contact the school ASAP so we can answer any questions and finalize your child’s plan for end-of-year assessments. Please note, all of our 3-5 grade students attending school in person, will participate in SOL testing as usual, at the school.
Attention parents/guardians of our 5th grade students who will attend Jouett Middle School next year… Jouett hosted an informational session on Zoom last night. If you were unable to attend, you can click here to access the presentation that was shared with parents. Contact information for the Jouett administration is included in the slide show. Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions. Students will be participating in a virtual visit to Jouett in the coming weeks!
And finally, we hope EVERYONE will be able to join us this Friday, April 30th, for the “We Are Woodbrook Talent Show”. The event will take place on Zoom at 6:00 pm. Click here to access the event and enjoy the many talents of our Woodbrook students!
Sincerely,

We are Woodbrook Talent Show
A message from Mrs. Gary:
"Hello Woodbrook! I don't know about you, but one thing I miss most during this pandemic is watching our students perform for an audience! This year, we are attempting our first ever VIRTUAL Woodbrook talent show. Last week, I sent all K-5 students an assignment in Seesaw. If they are interested in being a part of our show, they may respond to the assignment by sharing a video of themselves performing. We would love to see all types of performances: singing, dancing, acting, playing an instrument, telling jokes or magic tricks, martial arts, gymnastics, and more! Please make sure video submissions are no longer than 3 minutes. Students have until the end of the day on April 16 to submit their videos in Seesaw. This will give me two weeks to put together the videos in iMovie, so we can have a SPECIAL Woodbrook Movie Night over Zoom on Friday, April 30th! More details about that evening will be shared soon. I will also share the talent show video link with families so that it can be viewed independently if desired. I can't wait to see our Woody Bear performances! Have fun and be creative!"
Message from the PTO regarding Teacher Appreciation Week: Teacher Appreciation Week is coming up May 3rd – May 7th!! We would like to ensure that each one of our wonderful teachers, and staff members, receive a gift of appreciation from us this year. Currently, we are about 100 gift cards short from our goal. We have decided to extend the deadline for donations for one more week. The new deadline is April 23, 2021.
There are two options for donating:
1. Donate cash through Venmo or Paypal. The PTO Venmo account is @WoodbrookPTO or PayPal: Send money to "woodbrookpto99@gmail.com". Please send money via the Friends and Family option so that we don't get charged a fee. All cash donations received will be used to purchase gift cards in similar denominations from Amazon, Dunkin Donuts, Target & Starbucks.
2. Donate gift cards directly to the Woodbrook office. We will have an envelope at the front desk for collections. Please consider a $10 gift card to Amazon, Dunkin Donuts, Target or Starbucks (known teacher favorites!)
Please use the Sign-up Genius linked below to sign up for your donation - no need to note amounts, just indicate Gift Card (delivered to the school office) or Cash Donation (through Venmo).

Dear Woodbrook Families,
Thank you to all of our families who were able to join us for last night’s school wide Multicultural Celebration on Zoom. We enjoyed learning about the diverse cultures represented in our school and learned so much from each of the students and their families who participated. The team working on this project developed a WES Multicultural Web Page of the collection of activities families shared. They will continue to collect artifacts through the end of March. If your family would like to share something about your culture, you can go into Seesaw to access the activity under “ART”. It is called “Multicultural March”. We’d love to learn more about our Woodbrook School Community!

Car Drop-Off/Pick-Up
We’d like to thank all of our families for their patience as we work out the kinks in our arrival/dismissal procedures. We’ve already made a few tweaks that have made a positive difference. At the car loop, we ask that everyone pull up as far as possible so we can utilize the entire loop. With the increase in car riders (which we are thankful for), we just want to be sure we are being as efficient and safe as possible. Thank you again for your patience and support!

Wednesday March 10th - 4th/5th grade students on the Mon/Wed Hybrid Schedule
Thursday, March 11 - 4th/5th grade students on the Tues/Thurs Hybrid Schedule

February 26, 2021
Dear Woodbrook Families,
This week, we continue to plan for the transition to Stage Four. Just a reminder that March 8th and 9th will be asynchronous learning days for ALL students as teachers prepare for the transition. More information will be shared about student learning activities for these days. It’s important to note that while the School Board spoke of a March 15th start date, Elementary Students will begin Stage 4 on March 10th or 11th as follows...
Stage 4 Start Dates for Elementary Students:
Wednesday, March 10th - All PK-3 Students
Wednesday March 10th - 4th/5th grade students on the Mon/Wed Hybrid Schedule
Thursday, March 11 - 4th/5th grade students on the Tues/Thurs Hybrid Schedule
New School Hours for Stage 4 In-Person Learners: 8:40am - 3:20pm
As we shared in an email last week, we will be shifting our school hours by 1 hour. Beginning March 10th, arrival time for students at the school will be 8:40am and we will begin dismissing students at 3:20pm. We do anticipate a change in the start/end times for virtual learners. Teachers will communicate directly with parents if this becomes necessary.
Stage 4 Communication Timeline Regarding Class Placement & Transportation:
Week of March 1st:
All families will receive a letter in the mail next week confirming class placements for Stage 4. (However, Class Placements will not be view-able in Parent Portal until March 10th. This is a change from what was shared during the Community Conversations!)
By Friday, March 5th, parents will be able to view Bus Transportation information in Parent Portal. ALL parents should check this information as it will be changing from Stage 3.
During the week of March 1st, teachers will be reaching out to confirm class placements and to introduce themselves if they are new to your family.
While it is our goal to transition students as little as possible this year, there will be some student movement during Stage 4 as we work to reduce class sizes to support daily in-person learning with COVID restrictions.
Thank you to all who were able to join us this week for our WES Stage 4 Community Conversations. Below are the links to the presentation and recordings of these meetings:

February 12, 2021
Dear Woodbrook Families,
Last night, the Albemarle County School Board voted to move all schools to Stage Four of our Return to School Plan. This change will take place on Wednesday, March 10th for all elementary students in grades K-5.
For families who opted for in-person learning several weeks ago in the Stage 4 Survey, K-3 students will return 4-days per week (Monday-Thursday) under this plan, and fourth and fifth graders will return for two days per week (Monday-Wednesdays or Tuesdays-Thursdays). If you are unsure of how you responded to the Return to School Survey in December, your child’s teacher and the front office staff have this information. Please understand that this survey was binding, and late changes in responses can only be made on a space-available basis.
With the Board’s decision in place, we will now host our two optional Community Conversations via Zoom during the week of February 22nd. This will be an opportunity to review the Stage Four procedures for our returning families.
The WES Stage 4 Community Conversations will take place on:
Tuesday, February 23 (6:00-7:00 pm) - Spanish Translation Available - Zoom Link
Wednesday, February 24 (11:00am-12:00 pm) - Zoom Link
During the week of March 1st, we will communicate important information about class placements, days of the week for 4th and 5th graders, COVID Safety, and daily operations. While it is our goal to transition our students as little as possible this year, there will be some student movement as we work to reduce class sizes to support daily in-person learning with COVID restrictions.
We appreciate your support and patience during this remarkable time. Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can be of any more support to your family during this time.
Sincerely,
Ms. Williams & Ms. Underwood

February 5, 2021
Dear Woodbrook Families,
As you have likely heard by now, Superintendent Matt Haas recommended to the School Board that we progress to Stage Four of our Return to School Plan. The School Board will vote on this recommendation next Thursday at their regularly scheduled meeting. Should the Board vote to accept the superintendent’s recommendation in its current form, Stage Four will begin at Woodbrook on Wednesday, February 24th.
There is a lot of information to share regarding this new Stage and its impacts on our students and learning. We are excited to safely welcome back more of our students for in-person learning, while continuing to offer a robust virtual learning experience for those families who opt to remain virtual.
For families who opted for in-person learning several weeks ago in the Stage 4 Survey, K-3 students will return 4-days per week (Monday-Thursday) under this plan, with fourth and fifth graders returning two days per week (Monday-Wednesdays or Tuesdays-Thursdays). If you are unsure of how you responded to the Return to School Survey in December, your child’s teacher and the front office staff have this information. Please understand that this survey was binding, and late changes in responses can only be made on a space-available basis.
During the week of February 15th we will host two optional Community Conversations via Zoom to review the Stage Four procedures for our returning families. We will also communicate important information about class placements, days of the week for 4th and 5th graders, COVID Safety, and daily operations during this same week. While it is our goal to transition our students as little as possible this year, there will be some student movement as we work to reduce class sizes in K-3 to support daily in-person learning with COVID restrictions.
We look forward to communicating many more details with you over the coming weeks once the School Board votes on this recommendation. We appreciate your support and patience during this remarkable time. Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can be of any more support to your family during this time.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Williams & Mrs. Underwood

Thank you for participating in our “Miles for Martin” schoolwide event. Eleven Albemarle County schools including Woodbrook, participated this year along with folks from the county office building. Together, we logged 655 miles in recognition of Martin Luther King and his legacy of peacefully marching for an important cause. Thank you for being a part of this special Woodbrook tradition!
During the month of February, Woodbrook recognizes and celebrates Black History Month. Click here to the view message Ms. Underwood and I shared with our students this week and read the message below from our committee working on the Woodbrook MLK Ceremony coming up at the end of the month.
"I look to a day when people will be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." -Martin Luther King
The latter end of this quote embodies the heart and soul of Woodbrook's annual MLK Ceremony. Every year, we as a school come together to honor students, along with their families, who exemplify not only our CARES traits, but the qualities of Martin Luther King's legacy of leadership, courage, and commitment to community. This WES tradition will continue on even in the midst of social distancing. We'll be hosting a virtual MLK Ceremony on February 26th. Please be on the lookout for a Zoom link in the near future and a specific time. We look forward to joining together as one community again to highlight some exemplary students in every grade level.
Thank You,
Black History Month Committee

Greetings Woodbrook Families,
As you know, the Superintendent has announced that we will move to Stage 1 for a minimum of two weeks, at least until February 1st. This means no students in the buildings and all learning will be virtual for all students. With schools closed on Monday for the Martin Luther King holiday, Stage 1 begins Tuesday, January 19th.
For students who have been receiving instruction virtually during Stage 3, there will be no change. For hybrid students, beginning on Tuesday, the schedule will change just as it did the week before and after WInter Break. All virtual teacher-led instruction will be Monday through Thursday on an AM/PM schedule. Teachers will share schedules and post Zoom links in Seesaw. Fridays will remain asynchronous learning days.
On January 27th, the school division will communicate the plan for the week of February 1st - return to Stage 3 or remain in Stage 1. In the meantime, please stay safe and stay in touch if we can help in any way. The school office will remain open and the nurse will be available to serve families.
And lastly, Here’s a short video message that Ms. Underwood and I created and shared with students this past week as we kickoff the Woodbrook annual event, “Miles for Martin”. We challenge our students and families to think about an important cause that would positively impact our world and record miles walked throughout the month of January in pursuit of this dream. We ask that you record your miles walked in this Google form so we can celebrate our entire school community’s accomplishments. We have also extended the invitation to all ACPS schools and hope to log many miles in support of a kinder, more inclusive world for ALL.
We are proud of the diversity in our school and want to celebrate and learn more with and from each other as we model for our students what it means to be a kind and inclusive citizen in our school and in this world!
Thank you for your continued support and for trusting us with your children! Have a safe and joyful holiday weekend!
Sincerely,
Kristen Williams, Principal

January 8, 2021
Greetings Woodbrook Families and Happy New Year -
We hope you enjoyed a wonderful holiday break and had an opportunity to enjoy some restful, quality family time together. With this week being virtual for all of our students, it was a smooth transition back into school and we are grateful for your support in helping the children get back into the swing of things. It’s never easy after a long break.
As you hopefully read in last night’s message from ACPS, the plan for Monday, January 11th, is to resume Stage 3 and return to Hybrid learning. We look forward to welcoming our Hybrid students back into the building on Monday and want to remind everyone to please keep your child at home if he/she or anyone else in your family is currently experiencing Covid-like symptoms. Please reach out to our nurse, Pam MacPherson, with any questions. She can be reached via email at pmacpherson@k12albemarle.org or by phone at 434-973-6600.
As we all know and unfortunately witnessed again earlier this week, our country continues to face difficult and challenging times. As adults, it’s difficult to process and understand all that is going on. Explaining to our children and students what they are witnessing and experiencing, is even more challenging. We want to remind you that we are here for you and your children. We are committed to providing a safe and loving community for all and promise to model for our students in both our actions and our words, what it means to respect, honor, and love one another.
As we said to the staff earlier this week, we are here for you and together, we are stronger! I have no doubt that our school community will come together and exemplify what it means to love and respect one another as we work towards healing and moving forward during these incredibly difficult times.
Sincerely,
Kristen Williams, Principal
Jennifer Underwood, Assistant Principal

Greetings Woodbrook Families,
We would like to say thank you to all of our teachers and parents who had to quickly shift gears this week and convert back to virtual learning. For most of our students, it appeared to be a smooth transition and learning was able to safely continue for all.
Today, we hosted our first “Virtual School Wide Meeting”. It was such a great way to end the week and to build a sense of community! Seeing so many of our students dancing and singing together with smiles on their faces was certainly the highlight of the week. Thank you to Ms. Gary and her two children for leading us in this fun event!
Safety Reminders:

Greetings Woodbrook Families,
We did it! Together, we successfully completed our first full week of Stage 3 learning at Woodbrook Elementary! Our virtual students had the opportunity to settle in with their new classes and all of our hybrid students made it into school this week.
Our students are amazingly resilient, flexible, and kind. We are grateful to be with them both virtually and in-person as we navigate this strange school year together. They teach us so much and help keep all things in perspective. Thank you for putting your trust in us and for sharing your children with us each day. They truly bring us much joy!
Next week, we have school on Monday and Tuesday and will begin the Thanksgiving break on Wednesday (Nov.25). We hope you all find safe ways to be together with your loved ones. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to our school nurse, Pam Macpherson, with any questions or concerns should your child present with any new systems over the break. Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration: Huge shout out to Ms. Soto for hosting a wonderful celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. On Wednesday evening, families joined together on Zoom from their kitchens to follow along with Ms. Soto in learning how to make cheese quesadillas from scratch. Toy Lift
It’s hard to believe we are talking about holidays already. However, many organizations like Toy Lift are starting early to adjust for current situations.
If your family needs assistance from the Toy Lift, you must complete the voucher on-line. The deadline to submit your form on-line is Tuesday, November 3, 2020.
Here is the link to the online voucher:
English Form: https://bit.ly/32Co8QT
Spanish Form:https://forms.gle/re1Ckqv2vEPSJ6yRA
Some things to keep in mind:
Toy Lift will not accept bike requests this year.
According to Toy Lift, the earlier you apply the better chance they have of being able to meet your child’s wish list request.
If you have children at Jouett Middle School and Woodbrook, please consider selecting one school as your pick-up location for all of your children. Picking up at one location will help eliminate multiple pick-up stops for you and your family.
If you have any questions regarding Toy Lift please contact our school counselors: Sharon Buscher sbuscher@k12albemarle.org & Cheryl Drew cdrew@k12albemarle.org

October 9, 2020
Greetings Woodbrook Families,
As you may have heard last night, the Albemarle County School Board voted to move our school division forward to Stage 3 beginning November 9. This was a difficult decision and one that involved intense thought and feedback. We recognize this decision brings many mixed emotions and we want to assure families that we are committed to making this transition to Stage 3 as smooth as possible for our entire Woodbrook community.
As we’ve shared with you previously, the transition to Stage 3 may result in a change of teacher for some of our students. Unfortunately, this is not something we are able to inform parents of prior to making the decision to either remain 100% virtual or participate in the hybrid option as staffing decisions will depend on the number of students in each option. However, our goal will be to minimize the number of changes for all of our students wherever possible.
Families with students in grades PK-3 will be receiving an important survey from the school division today (Friday, Oct. 9) that will ask you to confirm whether or not your child will participate in the hybrid option or remain 100% virtual. Surveys are due by Friday, October 16th.
In order to support families through this decision-making process, we have planned two “Community Conversations” in the coming week. This will be an opportunity for families to ask clarifying questions about Stage 3 prior to completing their survey. Following are the dates, times, and Zoom links:
Monday, Oct. 12 - (6:00-6:45pm) - Zoom Link
Tuesday, Oct. 13 - (5:15-6:00pm) - Zoom Link (Spanish Translation Available)
(PTO Meeting to follow at 6:30pm on Zoom!)

Greetings Woodbrook Families:
We want to thank you for your patience, support, and partnership in getting through the first week of school. Together, we worked through many startup glitches and by Thursday, most of our students were up and running on Zoom and Seesaw. It was so wonderful to see and hear our students and teachers reconnecting. We could not have done it without you.Thank you and know that we will continue to work together in making sure all students are able to access their learning.
Zoom Family Help Session
We are providing two voluntary sessions this week for families to learn more about Zoom and to get help with any problems you may have with using this program.
Charli Nolan, who is our Woodbrook Learning Technology Integrator, will facilitate these sessions.
There are two opportunities:
Wednesday, 9/16 from 5:00-7:00pm (with live Spanish interpreting available)
Thursday, 9/17 from 5:00-7:00pm (with live Spanish interpreting available)
You may attend either session at any time that is convenient for you.

September 4, 2020
Greetings Woodbrook Families:
We are down for the count! The first day for virtual learning begins this Tuesday, September 8, 2020. As you know, ALL students (except those we have been in direct communication with) will be working from home on their devices and will connect with their teachers via Zoom for direct instruction and will use Seesaw to access learning resources and to submit their work. Teachers have emailed Zoom links and Seesaw codes to each family so all can be ready to go on Tuesday!
Ms. Underwood and I are very excited to welcome all of our students to the 20-21 school year! Click here to view our “Welcome Video” and please share with your children. We cannot wait to “see” them all next week!
We have also created a "Woodbrook Staff - Picture Directory" so that all families can put a face with the name. We have a few pictures missing but will continue to add and keep this up-to-date. Click here to access the new directory!
Upcoming Community Conversations
Save the date! We will host our next Community Conversation on September 29, 2020. Please join us at either of the times listed below:
5:30pm OR
6:30pm (Spanish translation will be provided for this session.)
We will provide Zoom links for these conversations as we get closer to the date.
Changes Made to our WES Daily Schedule for the Current School Year (only)
For the current school year, we will not have a librarian. Instead, we have asked Ms. Bonnie Herring, who already serves as a Kindergarten teaching assistant, to also serve as our Library Teaching Assistant for this school year. We will share more about her role and how the library will function this year at a later date. We hope to put a system in place that will allow students to check out books! Stay tuned...
During the current school year, we will not be implementing our Spanish program. Ms. Soto and Ms. Hunt will be partnering up with teachers to support virtual instruction and learning. We plan to resume our Spanish program in the 21-22 school year.
20-21 School Meals Program: For details about the ACPS student meals program, including cost, delivery information, menus, and the 2020-21 Free and Reduced Meal Application, please read the August 14 community message. This information is also featured on our Return to School website.
Technology Distribution & Internet Access Updates:
If your child does not have a computer or iPad to use for virtual learning, please call our main office to schedule a time to pick one up. If you are still in need of internet access, we can help! Please contact Ms. Underwood at junderwood@k12albemarle.org
White Boards for Virtual Learning:
If your child does not have a whiteboard at home to use for virtual learning, please stop by or call the main office so we can provide one for you. Many thanks to our PTO who made this possible by purchasing whiteboards for ALL of our Woodbrook students to use at home. Click here to access our WES PTO Website!
Virtual Class Schedules:
Albemarle County has developed a schedule for virtual learning that will provide consistency across all 15 elementary schools. As you are aware, none of us have ever implemented anything quite like this before; therefore, we fully anticipate adjustments will need to be made along the way in order for this to work for our students, teachers, and families. Here are a few of the details:
Each student will have a synchronous block of instruction (interactive with the teacher) on Monday-Thursday of each week. Students will be assigned to either the morning or afternoon for this synchronous instruction. This will include opening and closing class meetings, and instruction in the core content areas. (2.5-3 hours/day with built in breaks away from the screen.)
Each student will have a primarily asynchronous block of learning opposite their synchronous learning times on Monday-Thursday, which will include activities and independent practice through SeeSaw, or projects assigned by the teacher. The two exceptions may be:
A synchronous specials class (art, music or PE) which could be during this block - OR
Synchronous instruction as needed by an interventionist, special education teacher, ESOL teacher, or other support staff member
We will be recording synchronous sessions for students who are unable to attend on a certain day.
Fridays will be a day of asynchronous learning for most students, which will include activities and independent practice through SeeSaw, or projects assigned by the teacher. (Synchronous instruction for students in need of differentiated support or special education services, may occur on Fridays.)
The school day will run approximately 8:00am-3:00pm.
We recognize this is a lot of information. Reach out to your child’s teacher with specific questions and concerns.
Parent Portal:
If you have not yet set up a Parent Portal account, please call our school office at 434-973-6600 to request your login information.
