Foundations for Life Long Learning 1 August
Grey hair is a crown of splendour;
it is attained in the way of righteousness.
~Proverbs 16:31~
Dear Parents and Staff
We were blessed to have a full church for our Grandparents’ Day Liturgy yesterday. During his homily Fr Quynh spoke of the very significant role that his grandparents have played in his life and development, particularly in supporting his vocation to the Priesthood. He told the children that they should listen to their grandparents as there is much that they can learn from them. I hope the children listened carefully to Father’s words and pay heed by following the wisdom of their grandparent’s guidance and advice. A highlight of our Liturgy was the Kindergarten children’s first time attendance at a school Mass, joining us for the Opening Hymn and receiving a special blessing from Fr Quynh before returning to class just after the Opening Prayer.
After Mass the grandparents had the opportunity to visit their grandchildren’s classes before enjoying a beautiful morning tea prepared by our staff, served by our Year six leaders and co-ordinated by Joanita Stapleton.
Thank you to all of the grandparents for making the time to come along and be part of our day and to all who contributed to making it such a success.
INTERSCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY
As I’m writing this article our runners are getting onto the bus to head off to Tomato Lake. Over a number of weeks the children have been well prepared so that they are able to give their best performance at the Carnival. We are very proud of all of our competitors and wish them the best of luck in their events.
HOMELESSNESS WEEK (4 - 8 AUGUST)
At our staff prayer this morning Danielle Smith and Margaret Hennessy reminded us that it is Homelessness Week. Some very confronting facts are:
- Two in every five people counted as homeless are under the age of 25.
- Only 7% of people experiencing homelessness sleep rough. The rest are in cars, crisis accommodation or couch surfing.
- Over 200,000 Australians are waiting for public and community housing. The longer they wait, the greater their risk of homelessness.
- Homelessness is not the result of personal failings. The main causes of homelessness are poverty, unaffordable rents and family violence.
- Nationally, homelessness grew by 30% from 2006 – 2016.
This situation is an indictment on our society. A quote often attributed to Mahatma Gandhi states that “The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members.” If we are to accept this premise, I think we have a lot of work to do.
Please consider supporting one or more of the many agencies, such as the Society of St Vincent de Paul, which work to alleviate this complex problem.
For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me.
~Matthew 25:35-36~

THE BISHOPS' RELIGIOUS LITERACY ASSESSMENT 2019
At the request of the Western Australian Bishops, Year 3, Year 5 and Year 9 students in Catholic schools across Western Australia will take part in The Bishops’ Religious Literacy Assessment (BRLA) from the week commencing Monday 5 August in Term 3. The assessment will be accessible to students online.
The Bishops’ Religious Literacy Assessment is a large-scale, standardised assessment that consists of a series of Religious Education (RE) tests developed and marked by Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA). The purpose of the BRLA is to measure student learning of the content in the RE curriculum. Formal school and student reports are produced by CEWA and will become available to schools in Term 4.
The BRLA provides a ‘point in time’ snapshot of students performance in RE. Students’ knowledge and understanding of the content of the RE curriculum is assessed using a combination of multiple choice, short and extended response items. Students’ faith is not assessed. The use of the BRLA complements the school-based assessment programs in RE.
Please contact your child’s teacher or myself if you have any enquires regarding the administration of The Bishops’ Religious Literacy Assessment.

YEAR 3 CLASS NEWS
Writing
We have started this term looking at poetry writing. We learned how to write Haiku poems. Haiku poems originated in Japan and have three lines. The first line has five syllables, the second line has seven syllables and the third line has five syllables. Here are some of the Haiku poems that we wrote in class.

Maths
In Maths we have been learning how to measure length using centimetres and metres. We used tape measures and rulers to measure the length of objects such as our body parts and even lolly snakes!
Bishops Religious Literacy Assessment
In Week Three we will be completing the Bishops Religious Literacy Assessment. It will assess how much we know about Jesus, the Bible, the Church and the Sacraments. The test will be done on our iPads and we have been practising very hard.

MAN WALKS ON THE MOON - CELEBRATING 50 YEARS!!
On Monday, 29 July, Mrs Notte’s father, Mr Teraci, came to our school to talk to the students about the Apollo 11 Mission to the moon. Mr Teraci was one of the many people who helped put man on the moon. He talked about his time in Carnarvon and vital role the community played in the Apollo 11 Mission to the moon. Carnarvon was used as a space tracking station; it was the largest space tracking station outside the United States of America. Mr Teraci also spoke about the experience as being “mind-blowing” and how wonderful it felt when the mission was successful.

PERFORMING ARTS FESTIVAL
LIBRARY NEWS
To celebrate Children's Book Week we will be having a special book character parade on Wednesday morning on 14 August. Children are encouraged to dress up as their favourite book character. The theme for this year is 'Reading is my Secret Power." Staff and students can dress up as characters that have a special power - they can be smart, super funny, have an amazing imagination or have a magical power. In previous years, the most imaginative costumes have been ones that have been home made with things found around the house or recycled materials. I hope you have fun planning your costumes and look forward to seeing you at this special event.

P&F DISCO
The school disco was held last Friday in the multi-purpose hall and there were some very cool dance moves on display from all of the year levels! The P&F would like to thank all of the parents and carers who volunteered their time to assist on the night, ensuring everything ran smoothly and everyone had a good time. We would also like to thank the staff for allowing us to use the canteen and library space, especially given the current renovations in progress.
A parent from our school community has kindly donated a Google Home Mini as a door prize for the disco so all of the disco tickets have been kept and a lucky winner will be drawn at this weeks assembly.
