Michigan's M-STEP for Parents
The Assessment - What You Need to Know
- Michigan Department of Education (MDE) calls it M-STEP which stands for "Michigan Student test of Educational Progress."
- Students in 5th, 8th, and 11th grades take the assessment
- 45 questions from History, Geography, Civics, Economics, and Citizenship
- Given in Spring of each school year on a secure computer connected to the Internet
- Testing Window this year is April 11 through 29

- It's only one of several pieces of information used to measure student performance
Preparation - What You Need to Know
- Preparation is throughout the year in each grade level
- Read everyday with your child and talk about what was read
- Communicate with your child's teacher about what's being taught in Social Studies so you know what you can talk about with your child
- Reinforce with child all "school work" is practice for improving and getting smarter
- Review with your child the sample paper items that be found at this link
