The Assessment - What You Need to Know

  • Michigan Department of Education (MDE) calls it M-STEP which stands for "Michigan Student test of Educational Progress."
  • Students in 5th, 8th, and 11th grades take the assessment
  • 45 questions from History, Geography, Civics, Economics, and Citizenship
  • Given in Spring of each school year on a secure computer connected to the Internet
  • Testing Window this year is April 11 through 29

  • It's only one of several pieces of information used to measure student performance

Preparation - What You Need to Know

  • Preparation is throughout the year in each grade level
  • Read everyday with your child and talk about what was read
  • Communicate with your child's teacher about what's being taught in Social Studies so you know what you can talk about with your child
  • Reinforce with child all "school work" is practice for improving and getting smarter
  • Review with your child the sample paper items that be found at this link
