November 9, 2018
Colts,
This week I saw a lot of students that were epitomizing self-determination in multiple ways including their studies. CMS has a course called AVID, which is an acronym for Advance Via Individual Determination. That acronym is constantly reflected in our staff and students. Individual determination is seen throughout our campus on a daily basis. As we all know, the middle school years are a time where students take on more individualized responsibility that prepares them for their high school experience and future. That same determination is seen in our student-athletes, many of which ended their school fall sports season this week. Those Colts that participated in our fall sports, such as football, volleyball, cheer, and dance, exemplify that same type of dedication and determination that it takes to be successful. It's always great to see our Colts showing grit in and out of the classroom as they continue to learn how to be self-regulated learners to be the best that they can be.

BOBBY BRAGAN - applications due Nov. 15th
In September CMS counselors talked to 8th grade English classes about the Bobby Bragan Scholarship. Students complete an application and a 500-700 word handwritten essay that is submitted to the campus and blind copy judged by three judges. The top scoring male student and the top scoring female student have their applications and essays sent to Bobby Bragan Youth Foundation for the final judging. Applications and essays are due back to CMS 8th grade English teachers – Mr. Woolley or Mrs. Sloan by November 15th at 3:25. Please contact the counseling apartment for further questions.
8TH GRADE FOUR YEAR PLANNING (ALSO GOOD FUTURE INFO. FOR ALL)
Counselors are still meeting with all 8th grade students individually to start a four year plan and choose an endorsement. These individual meetings will go through the end of the 1st semester. Remember, this plan is a working document in Skyward that can be changed this year and in high school. Plus, when the high school counselors come to visit with our students in the 2nd semester, students will revisit their plans and endorsement choices to make any changes. Four year planning and choosing an endorsement is going to be a focus for this school year, and we want our students and parents to feel good about their choices for high school. Please see the links for the video below and for the 9th grade course sheet. All of this information is available through your student's Google 8th Grade Guidance Classroom and more information can be found by clicking on the links below:

8TH GRADE PARENTS:
While we have not met with all 8th grade students yet, we have met with many. If your child has already met with his/her counselor to start a 4 year plan and select an endorsement, you should have received an email asking you to review the plan and sign off on it. If you have not done so yet, please do so in one of the following ways:
Sign and return the paper copy of the 4 year plan that was sent home with your child
Log into Skyward and e-sign the career plan and the endorsement (you must e-sign in two places)
Email your child’s counselor and let her know of any changes you would like made to the plan or that you have seen and approve of the plan
Collegiate Academy Registration for 2019-2020
Attention all 8th graders interested in Collegiate Academy! Collegiate Academy is an Early College High School that is designed for students to earn a diploma and an Associate's Degree simultaneously, and it's all free. The online application for the GCISD Collegiate Academy at TCC Northeast is now available. 8th graders must complete an application in order to be considered for acceptance as an incoming freshmen during the 2019-2020 school year. This year, students may access the application directly from the Collegiate Academy website! Due to the success and popularity of this program, it is encouraged that every student who is interested in possibly joining the Phoenix Family to submit an application as soon as possible as space will be limited. The Collegiate Academy application will be available online from November 1, 2018 through January 18, 2019. The link to their school website is: ca.gcisd.net. Applications can also be found in the counseling office.
REMINDER – Please make sure that you are checking grades in Skyward. You can download the Skyward app for your phone or for your child’s phone so you can monitor grades.
