Make-A-Wish Surprise at Duran South Football Game
By: Mileena Painter
Our home game against Briarwood Christian on September 18th started like any other home game. It all started when the 7th grade football players ran through the banner. The other DJHS cheerleaders and I cheered them on through the first two quarters of the game. Finally it was halftime. First the Briarwood cheerleaders performed, and they did great. Then the DJHS cheerleaders took the field. I was able to perform the dance with them. Even though I could not jump or get on the ground, I still did the dance with my squad.
I knew that there was going to be a balloon release for Leukemia Awareness Month and Childhood Cancer Awareness after our performance, but what I didn’t know was I would be getting my Make-A-Wish reveal. So after our performance some of the PCHS Varsity cheerleaders came onto the field with orange and gold balloons. The announcer told everyone about me and my ongoing journey with Leukemia. He explained that I was diagnosed in August of 2017, and would complete my treatment in December of 2019. We had orange balloons for Leukemia Awareness and gold balloons for Childhood Cancer Awareness.
After we released the balloons, I heard the announcer say, “Mileena, you are going to have to cancel those plans that you and Matilee have been making for your 13th birthday. Make-A-Wish is granting your Wish to go to Disney World and Universal Studios with your best friend on your 13th birthdays!!!” Even with the Minnie Mouse ears that all of the girls were wearing, and the Mickey and Minnie Mouse balloons that were given to me, it took a couple of seconds for what the announcer said to sink in. Matilee and I were going to be spending our 13th birthdays at Disney World!! Make-A-Wish is amazing! They have made my “Wishes” come true. It is truly a night that I will never forget. I was able to share it with all the people that I care about, my parents, my best friend, my classmates; all of these are my family.
