Charlestown School Updates
For members of our learning community - September 8th, 2017
REMIND
I'm going to try something new this year to help enhance communication. I encourage all parents to sign up for remind so that I can send you short updates (in the form of text messages) to remind you of school events and provide you with instant updates for situations such as late busses and program cancellations.
Many teachers are already using REMIND with their parents and this system has positively improved communication!
Please click this link to sign up. Your cell # won't be shared with anyone and no personal information about any student will be shared via Remind. This is for general school information only!
Open House Evenings and Ice Cream and Fruit Socials
We will be holding an IceCream and Fruit Social. Monetary Donations will be accepted to help support an elementary school in the Houston area following the devastation of Hurricane Harvey.
The Open House times are below. Note that the times are staggered to help with parking congestion. Some timeframes as shorter as grades K and 3 have already held Orientation Meetings with parents. We try to end early so that students can get to bed onetime for school the next day. Please be careful when walking and driving in our front parking lot.
There is an additional parking is behind the school.

End of week 2 update
Beginning the week of September 18-22, students in grades 1-4 will begin participation in the daily reading block. Students are grouped by current reading levels and students may have a different classroom teacher for daily reading instruction. Additional staff members help to support the students who are not reading on grade level. This system has proven to be very effective in targeting the individual needs of each student. During the year, some students move to a different class if they are making great growth or need additional support in reading. Students enjoy the opportunity to spend part of their day with some different peers while engaging in reading activities that directly match their skills and needs.
Character Trait of the Month - Kindness
Each month we will be highlighting one character trait with students during all parts of the school day. Our focus for September is Kindness. Teachers are encouraging students to share examples of how to be kind towards others and are recognizing students who show this trait.
Some of our students were recognized as Bright Shining Stars today for their acts of kindness towards others.
Great Job to: Seth Stewart, Landon Charette, Matthew Smith and Madison Bartnick!!!
Parent Reminders:
Technology Consent Forms - (Grades 2-4) Please return the signed forms for permission for your child to use vetted websites and applications to enhance their learning.
Background Checks: If you'd like to volunteer in our school, please complete a background check form. Once approved, parents can volunteer for one year (356 days). Most checks expire in the fall as we collect new ones during September and at Open Houses.
Student Allergies - If your child is placed in a classroom with peers who have a food allergy, you have been notified by letter from Mrs. Coulson. Please help us to ensure that students are safe when eating snack in their classrooms. A peanut/treenut free table is used by students who bring a non-nut containing lunch. Please keep Mrs. Coulson updated on any allergies and medical conditions.
Emergency Drills - Today we practiced a fire drill. Other drills that are state mandated and practiced include: Lock Down, Shelter in Place and Evacuation. If your child is worried, please remind them that these drills keep us safe. Our staff explains the importance of the drills based on the age of their students.
