The Buzz from Beech
Beech Parent Newsletter - Week of September 20 , 2021
A Message from the Principal
Hello Beech families,
Despite communication last week, we are still seeing parents bring in cupcakes and treats to celebrate their children's birthdays. Please read through the Birthday Celebrations information below to reference. We understand that once you purchase and bring them to the school that you may be frustrated when we tell you they can't be delivered. Please help us out by following this school expectation.
This past week we began serving hot lunch instead of sandwiches. The students seemed to enjoy these meals much more and we are happy that we made the transition this week. We have also seen some great things happening in the classrooms, hallways, and at arrival and dismissal. I truly feel like we are getting used to being in school each day and I couldn't be more proud of our students and staff.
I hope that you are hearing about all the great things that are happening in your children's classrooms. If they aren't sharing, make sure to ask! If you have any questions or concerns please reach out to your teacher first and then to Ms. Evenson or I if you feel that your concern is not resolved.
Enjoy your weekend and we will see you on Monday morning!
Thank you!
Ms. Nickel

Move this World - Social Emotional Learning at Beech
There are 5 Core SEL Competencies
- Self-Awareness - our capacity to recognize our individual feelings and emotions as well as the ability to express them accurately and productively
- Self-Management - our capacity to successfully manage and regulate our emotions, particularly difficult ones
- Social Awareness - our capacity to appreciate the thoughts, feelings, and perspectives of others
- Relationship Skills - involve our capability to form and maintain relationships with others
- Responsible Decision Making - our ability to make positive choices. When making choices you should be thinking about the consequences that your choices can have on both your personal life and on others
Redford Union has intentionally purchased Move this World, a SEL program, for our teachers to use each week. At Beech, we have scheduled morning meetings each day where we focus on building a classroom community and prioritizing our SEL together. Your child will watch and engage with short interactive videos. Each video is tied to a core social emotional learning competency listed above. As the year progresses, your can expect and encourage your child to carry the skills they will learn at school into the home. We are looking forward to taking this Social Emotional Learning Journey with our students and look forward to seeing your children express themselves, setting new goals and developing a greater sense of self along the way!

The September-December schedule is attached below.
Exposure to COVID - Updates happening frequently - Must up to Date Guidance Below
Each day - Use the COVID-19 Screening Tool for Families (click on the PDF below)
All COVID-19 related decisions are completed with guidance from
Wayne County Health Department
- Keep your child home and call the office to report exposure to a positive COVID-19 case. We will need the following information: date of exposure to positive case, date your child became symptomatic, if exposure is from someone in the house then further questions will be asked when you speak to the Principal.
- You will be given information regarding possible date of return based on initial information. If there are additional people in the household and symptoms begin for them then we need to be informed and return date could be adjusted.
- Your child's teacher will be asked to put a few items of work together for your child.
Exposure at School
- Once the school is made aware of a positive COVID-19 case we will begin the process of contact tracing.
- We will use the School Quarantine Guidance Tool from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services for those who DO NOT HAVE SYMPTOMS
- We will use the CDC guidelines for quarantine for those who have symptoms
- If your child is required to quarantine your child's teacher will be asked to put a few items of work together for your child.
In both instances, we will communicate via phone and if available follow up in writing via email. As a district, we will be using the Wayne County Return to School Roadmap. Moving forward, any positive case in the building will be communicated school-wide via letter. Please make sure that your phone and email are up to date in the main office with Ms. Dunn.

Student Birthday Celebrations
Beech does not allow for cupcakes, balloons, pizza, etc, to be brought in to celebrate student birthdays. We know that this could be disappointing for some children and for that we apologize. We have to monitor for food allergies and ensure that academic time is honored. Thank you for your support and understanding.
