ASAP Walk and Roll for a Cure
One of OSS's long term families, and our Lynx campus Math Teacher Mr. Adair and his family, are planning a benefit walk to show support and bring awareness to a little known illness that affects their family called “Chiari Malformation Syndrome” or just “Chiari” for short.
Mrs. Adair has recently become the Central Florida Spokesperson for Chiari Awareness, and through her efforts has made the month of September “Chiari Awareness Month” for the state of Florida, thanks to the recent declaration that Ron DeSantis, our Governor has just signed. Jeni is also in the process of having the Mayor of our home town of Apopka sign a similar proclamation as we are concerting our efforts in sponsoring the Fundraiser in Apopka.
There are many ways to participate and/or show support:
- Attend the walk on Saturday, September 28th at 10am. (Registration and review of the silent auction items and raffle items will begin at that time, and introductions start at 11, with the walk at 11:15am)
- Sponsor a walker and donate in their name on the website
- Donate independently to cause on the website
- Read about how Chiari has affected our family on the website
September 2019 will mark the second annual observance of "American Founders." American Founders' month offers the opportunity for students to participate in activities related to the nation's founding fathers, who were instrumental in crafting historical documents that provide for individual liberty and representative government.
In each of our September Newsletters, we will feature one or two of our seven founding fathers, be sure to check back each week to learn more.
John Adams
Lawyer, statesman, president, gadfly, New Englander: John Adams was a lot of things, but boring wasn't one of them. Here are some interesting facts you might not know about Mr. Adams.
- He was not a slaveholder. Of the first five American presidents, Adams was the only non-slaveholder.
- But he was against abolition. In 1801, two abolitionists sent a pamphlet by Warner Mifflin to John Adams. He responded that, while he was opposed to slavery and had never owned a slave in his life, he did not support the abolitionist movement—he thought it was dangerous and potentially destabilizing.
- Adams died on the same day as Thomas Jefferson. The two staunch rivals passed on July 4, 1826, exactly fifty years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
- He was the first president to live in the White House. Adams and his wife Abigail moved into the White House in 1800, before it was even completed, and lived there for only four months before his term ended.
- He created America’s oldest band. In 1798, Adams signed an act of Congress for the creation of the United State Marine Band, “the oldest continuously active professional musical organization in our country.”
Benjamin Franklin
Author, printer, political theorist, politician, freemason, postmaster, scientist, inventor, humorist, civic activist, statesman, diplomat; Benjamin Franklin was many things but boring wasn't one of them. Here are some interesting facts you might not know about Mr. Franklin.
- Franklin is the only Founding Father to have signed all three documents that freed America from Britain, the Declaration of Independence, The Treaty of Paris and the United States Constitution.
- Benjamin Franklin never patented an invention; he considered them as gifts to the public. His inventions were practical and designed to make everyday life easier. As he wrote in his autobiography: “As we enjoy the advantages from the inventions of others, we should be glad of an opportunity to serve others by any invention of ours; and this we should do freely and generously.”
- Franklin did not discover electricity but he discovered positive and negative charges to describe electricity by flying a kite during a storm.
- He was the first person to chart the Gulf Stream and to propose an explanation of storm movement in the northern hemisphere. He proposed that storms can move in opposite direction from the wind.
- In 1731 Franklin founded the first commercial franchise system in the Americas by creating co-partnerships. He had two female franchisees.
celebrate Freedom week & Constitution Day
On September 17, 1787, the delegates to the Constitutional Convention met for the last time to sign the document they had created, the US Constitution. OSHS students will observe this important day in our nation's history in their social studies classes on September 17, 2019.
In addition to Constitution Day, Celebrate Freedom Week is an official holiday in Florida schools from September 23-27, 2019. It is designed to emphasize the teaching of our country's origins with an emphasis on the founding documents. Check the newsletter next week to see what our Orcas are learning in class.
Science Fair Update Week 1
Everyone is excited about brainstorming ideas for their Science Fair projects! Students have proposed their ideas and solidifying them with their teachers. They are utilizing the scientific inquiry skills they have been learning since the beginning of the school year. This week, once their projects are approved by their science teachers, they will be working on constructing their research question and hypothesis. If students are not sure about their specific question, they can always talk with their science teacher and make adjustments to their initial question.
Modification is an important part of the scientific process! Often times their question is already answered by someone else’s project on the internet, but that is fine. They can modify their question to something more novel or in-depth!
Science Fair is a long-term project. As such it is important to keep track of due dates and be aware of the expectations. Always consult with your teacher if you are stuck, need clarification or guidance. Use the timeline in your Science Fair Packet to organize your research and manage your time efficiently.
Best of luck Orcas!
Mrs. Demir

Multi-Tiered System of Support
What is a Multi-Tiered System of Supports?
MTSS is a term used to describe an evidence-based model of schooling that uses data-based problem-solving to integrate academic and behavioral instruction and intervention. The integrated instruction and intervention is provided to students at varying levels of intensity based on student need. The goal is to prevent problems and intervene early so that students can be successful. Please reach out school staffing specialists if you have any questions.

30/30 Dismissal Rule
What is Delayed Dismissal? 30/30 Rule?
The “30/30 Rule" is a Delayed Dismissal Weather procedure that the nationally recognized. It is required that the “30/30 Rule” be enacted by the school if thunder is heard within 30 seconds of a lightning strike. Orlando Science Middle/High follows this rule.
When 30/30 Rule is implemented, students will not be dismissed until 30 minutes has passed from the last sound of thunder. However, parents/guardians who wish to pick up their child/children during delayed dismissal, will be allowed to sign out their child/children at the cafeteria or front office.
In order to pick up your student(s) from the cafeteria or front office during this procedure, parents/guardians must bring their dismissal sign to the front door of the school to sign their child/children out. If you do not have a dismissal sign, you will need to provide a picture ID and be on the school pick-up list to pick-up the child/children. Bus riders will be delivered home when conditions are all safe for dismissal.
An automated telephone and/or email message will be used to notify parents/guardians about delayed dismissals. Always be sure to update the school when your phone or email information changes. Thank you for your cooperation on our students’ safety.
