Learn Like a Champion
Last week my wife and I received an email form school about my son... We had to have a conversation with my son about his behavior. We know he is a great kid with lots of energy and simply enjoys laughing and "chatting it up." When we received news that he was very social in class we had the talk we never thought we would have. Our approach was to connect our favorite team to the lesson we wanted to talk with him about. We all love Notre Dame football. We started the conversation about his passion and enthusiasm for life. We highlighted the sign that ND football players walk through every time they put on the pads "Play like a Champion Today." We talked about expectations and that learning is important. Of course he was upset, no one likes to let their teachers, parents, or children down. We talked about what learning entails and what his role is. He is expected to listen, engage, think, generate questions, laugh, but most importantly being ready and available to learn. We linked the motto "Play like a Champion Today" and created our own saying "Learn Like a Champion Today." To him that means listening to whoever is talking, working hard on my work, be quiet so others can learn, following instructions, keeping my body in control, and most importantly have fun. My entire life has been in front of kids as a coach, as a principal, as a teacher, and most importantly as a parent and I was reminded that I have to talk with my own kids to set and remind our expectations for them to be ready to "Learn like a Champion Today." I wonder had I reminded him of his expectations for learning everyday before school would this talk have been so hard.
Interim Report Card
We are in the process of building a new more relevant report card that will access the areas we are teaching in the classrooms. A team of teachers has been meeting, discussing, and designing a new interim/ trimester report card weekly since we started the school year. Knowing we are teaching to the Massachusetts State Frameworks we need to design an assessment that will match our instruction. We are hoping to have the Interim Progress Report Card read next week. Thank you for your patience.
