MC Senior Update

MC news for you!

A bunch of info -- read and save, please!

Hello, seniors and families-

We are now halfway through the semester -- including today, there are 42 days of instruction remaining, and then finals. Now is not the time to slack off, get sidetracked, or give up! Stay focused!

A gentle reminder that college admissions offers may be rescinded if grades drop in spring semester. Sadly, we've heard from students who had their offers of admission cancelled in July once the college received their final transcripts. Read these FAQs from UCSC, for example. So work hard these last 8 weeks, crush your finals, and then you can relax!

Home High School Graduation

If you intend to participate in graduation or senior activities at your home school, please make sure you are aware of deadlines and details. Check your school's website for senior activities and graduation information regularly. You can also contact the Student Activities Director or Counseling Department. We do not receive information from the school sites, so if you are participating it is up to you to stay informed.

Course Updates

English IV: We're finishing up Blindness next week. After this week's creative writing, next week's end-of-unit writing will be a critical theory analysis. Take a break over the break :-)

Government: Students are studying the Legislative branch and participating in mock House debates. They are starting a new unit when we return from break, so nothing to work on over the break.

Planning for Next Year

  • If you received college acceptance letters, make sure you adhere to due dates regarding any information you need to provide to various colleges. Also, be sure you update your Naviance account to reflect your acceptance status. Home schools will send out final transcripts to colleges upon your request in June. You will also need to send out an official college transcript from the college through Websmart. Your next school requires these by the end of June.

  • If you intend to continue at one of the San Mateo Community College District colleges in the summer or fall, you should apply now. Concurrently enrolled students need to reapply as high school graduates. Make sure you meet with a college transfer counselor to update your Student Education Plan so that you get priority enrollment, which begins for summer and fall on May 2. Otherwise, you won't get to register for classes until mid-May and classes might be full. Summer classes are already posted on Websmart.

Road Trip!

If you haven't already checked out prospective schools, try to take a tour before Decision Day (May 1). Some schools have special open house events for admitted students, such as

UC Admit Days. Many CSU campuses also have open house events. Check out this campus visit guide and this checklist of questions.

Financial Aid

For most families, a big part of deciding which school to go to is weighing financial aid offers. We are not experts by any means, but here are some resources you may find helpful -- please look at the two newsletters we sent out earlier linked below, as well as these resources:
