Sehome High School - Mariner Memo -
Week of June 15 - 19
letter from the principal
It is the last week of our 2019-2020 school year. What a year it has been! It has been my incredible honor to lead this group of students, staff, and families throughout this school year. I have appreciated learning alongside you.
This year certainly did not end as we ever thought it would. I want to thank our students for continuing to connect and learn with your teachers. You have continued to work to keep Sehome a community by engaging in learning, participating in Sehome Instagram Challenges, and for supporting your classmates through this time.
I also want to thank all our Sehome parents who have assisted in educating and supporting your child during this time. Thank you for reaching out to encourage the teachers and administration at Sehome. We have felt the love and so appreciate you taking the time to reach out! We truly believe that parents and families are the first and best teacher! This has just been reaffirmed this year as we see the ways you are teaching your child to adapt and find a way to make it work.
A huge thank you so all of our Sehome staff members who have showed great perseverance and resiliency this school year. When school was closed on March 13, they got to work the next Monday learning how to use Microsoft Teams. They began an entirely new way of doing school overnight. They pushed through so many challenges and worked to connect and engage students remotely! They were innovative and flexible. They showed great care and compassion for their students, their colleagues, and for me.
We have come so far, and we still have so far to go. Over the summer, as a district, we are working to create a plan to safely reopen our school with the greatest amount of face-to-face learning that is possible. If we need to go to remote learning, it will look different than it did this spring. We were in emergency mode and did the best that we could at the time. We know that our students need frequent interaction and learn best when they are collaborating with their peers. We are committed to making it happen in the best way possible.
We will never go back to school as usual- and that is a good thing. We have taken the time to look at our system. Truly look at each aspect and reimagine, retool. We are looking to create a new system that supports all students. We know that the system was broken and did not work for all kids. We are committed to re-imaging and purposefully planning a new way of doing things. We hope to hold on to the very best in our system and create new ways of doing things where we fell short. If you have creative ideas or things you always thought schools should be doing or be about, please reach out to me! I want to hear your ideas, your hopes for your children, and your dreams for our school system could be! Dream big! Press on the thinking of the way things have always been done. I am so excited and energized to think of what we can be on the other side of this experience.
We continue to listen and learn more about how we can create anti-racism in our schools and what systems we can dismantle and what we need to create to improve outcomes for our students. Thank you so all of you who reached out with an article suggestion, a book to read, or something for me to consider. Please continue to think of me as you are on your journey of learning as well.
Please know that I appreciate each one of you and am humbled to lead this group of people during this time. Sending nothing but love for an amazing summer resting, regrouping, and reimagining.
With love,
Sonia Bell
