Greetings Deerwood Faculty and Staff,

Welcome back to another fantastic year at Deerwood Academy! I am very excited to begin collaborating with you and helping your students to become critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skilled researchers, and ethical users of information. Media Center PASSES aND Hours of Operation

Students may visit the media center to checkout books as they arrive for school, or with teacher permission each day from 7:30am-8:00am. All students must be in class for morning announcements and morning routine. Please do not send students during this time.


Mondays- Open Checkout All Day/ 8:30am-1:30pm

(Please use Media Center passes to allow four students at a time to visit the media center.)


Tuesdays- Class Sign Up

(Sign up for a time slot for your class in the Media Center every Friday. Form will be on circulation desk.)


Wednesdays- Class Sign Up

(Sign up for a time slot for your class in the Media Center every Friday. Form will be on circulation desk.)


Thursdays- Class Sign Up

(Sign up for a time slot for your class in the Media Center every Friday. Form will be on circulation desk.)


Fridays- Open Checkout All Day / 10:00am-1:30pm

(Please use Media Center passes to allow four students at a time to visit the media center.)


Lunch Bunch- TBA


ALL STUDENTS MUST HAVE THE MEDIA CENTER PASS/LANYARD TO ENTER MEDIA CENTER! If you are a new teacher or you need new passes, please email me at drrice@atlanta.k12.ga.us.

August Monthly Focus: Media Center Orientation

Media Center Orientation will begin August 29th. Please stop by the circulation desk to sign up. Topics to be covered include, but are not limited to: fiction/non-fiction/biography, Accelerated Reader, Myon, Lexile, Book Care, Finding Right Fit Books, Media Center behavior, Procedures, etc.

NEW BOOKS ADDED TO OUR COLLECTION...

New titles have been added to the media center collection! (Thank you to the department chairs who submitted titles on behalf of their team :) In addition to the numerous popular fiction titles and classics added, please see below for a few non-fiction titles that will be beneficial to you as you cover this material with your students! Additionally, please feel free to come in and checkout titles that support various SEL themes and competencies!

WANT TO SEE WHAT'S ON OUR SHELVES WITHOUT LEAVING YOUR CLASSROOM? HERE'S HOW...

  • Go to myBackpack
  • Click on Follett Destiny tab
  • Click on catalog
  • Click on the Destiny Discover tab (to the left)
  • Search for a particular title by keyword, title, author or other
  • OR browse by topic, popular titles, or e-books
  • If you find what you're looking for, simply email me and I will pull it for you, or feel free to come down and find it on the shelves.


If you'd like to see the e-resources that APS owns, do the following:


  • Click on the Follett Shelf (not Follett Destiny)
  • Type desired information in search box
  • You can search by AR designation, Lexile, etc.

MEDIA CENTER POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

  • Students may return books to the book drop at any time during the day.
  • Students may checkout books in the morning before the 8am announcements.
  • Pre-K and Kindergarten students must leave books in teacher's classroom instead of taking them home (unless special arrangements have been made with Mrs. Rice.)
  • Students who lose or damage books, will not be allowed to check out again until they have satisfied the designated fine.
  • Pre-K, K, 1st and 2nd will check out one book per visit.
  • 3rd-5th grades may check out two books per visit. (Students should read both books before returning for another.)
  • Teachers may checkout as many books as needed provided that they share with their grade level (if working on same topic). If I am unable to check them out to you, please leave the books on the circulation desk with your name on them and I will bring them to you. Please do not borrow books without checking them out.
  • Please refrain from bringing food or drink (water is acceptable) into the media center.
  • If chairs or tables are rearranged by you, or your class, please put them back in their proper space before leaving.
  • Student seating is for student use only.
