February Monthly Focus: Accelerated Reader Refresher

This month's lesson will center around Accelerated Reader for teachers who need a refresher!

  • AR is a computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice. Students pick books at their own level and read it at their own pace. When finished, students take a short quiz on the computer. (Passing the quiz is an indication that they understood what was read.) AR gives both children and teachers feedback based on the quiz results, which the teacher then uses to help students set goals and direct ongoing reading practice.

  • Students will read books, take AR tests, and receive incentives as they grow and earn points!

  • The students on each grade level with the most AR points will win a bike!

  • Teachers who fully support the program and push their students will win a Teacher Power Pack and gift card!

What Should Students Know Before Visiting the Media Center?

Big picture

What is ZPD and why is it important to students and teachers?

Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) suggests the readability-level range from which a student should be selecting books for optimal growth in reading without frustration. It is important to note that the Star Reading ZPD is approximate. Success at any level also depends on the student's interest and prior knowledge of a book's content. Teachers should use their professional judgment to adjust the level of books read to match an individual student's needs and interests.

Reading within the optimal range as identified by ZPD is a key component of successful reading practice and goal-setting. Paired with consistent and meaningful reading practice, ZPD can help teachers guide their students toward growth, ultimately preparing them for college and career success.

SEL Book of the Month

Coretta Scott King Honor Award for Illustration2019

I couldn't play on the same playground as the white kids.
I couldn't go to their schools.
I couldn't drink from their water fountains.
There were so many things I couldn't do.

In 1963 Birmingham, Alabama, thousands of African American children volunteered to march for their civil rights after hearing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. speak. They protested the laws that kept black people separate from white people. Facing fear, hate, and danger, these children used their voices to change the world. Frank Morrison's emotive oil-on-canvas paintings bring this historical event to life, while Monica Clark-Robinson's moving and poetic words document this remarkable time.
