HOWARDS GROVE SCHOOL DISTRICT
"Understanding - Caring - Flexible"
COVID-19 Alternative Grading Philosophy
- Students will not receive a grade lower than the grades earned on March 17, 2020
- Goals for the remainder of the school year are for the students to maintain and sustain skills learned through March
Grades 5-8 (P/I)
- If students meet the minimum essential standards of the course student's will receive a (P) pass for the course
- If students do not meet the essential standards of a course or the students level of understanding is unknown the student will receive an I (incomplete).
- Students can convert an incomplete grade to a Pass by working with the instructor and meeting the deadline.
Grades 9-12 (Hybrid Model)
- Parents choose for students whether they will receive a letter grade or PASS/incomplete
- High School credit will not be earned for courses in which a student receives an incomplete and does not complete the essential standards by the set deadline. Work with instructors to convert Incomplete grades to a passing grade.
Northview Elementary
4th Term Grading:
Northview’s grades for the third quarter were distributed on report cards March 16th prior to the regularly scheduled parent teacher conferences for March 17th and March 19th. Junior Kindergarten through fourth grade students in the fourth quarter of the 2019-2020 school year will receive a passing grade. Students will transition to the next grade level for the 2020-2021 school year. During the COVID-19 virtual/remote learning period, Northview teachers and staff continue to support students in maintaining current skills and strategies previously taught through March 17, 2020 as well as instructing and building upon skills and concepts taught in fourth quarter. The goal for the remainder of the school year is for students to continue to engage in the learning activities and assignments teachers are providing for students. Teachers and staff continue to offer support and feedback to foster growth and support learning. The end of the year report cards comments from teachers are valuable information demonstrating students progress through the school closure of student engagement and progress.
Howards Grove Middle School
4th Term and 2nd Semester Grading:
Students will earn a Pass/Incomplete at the end of 4th term (pass means that a student has met the minimal requirements for essential standards; Incomplete means that a student has not met those minimal requirements for essential standards.)
Students can opt to have a Pass changed to a letter grade with parent consent at the end of the quarter.
Students will not be assigned an “F”, instead, students will be issued an “I” (Incomplete)
An “I” signifies that due to the COVID-19 school closures and lack of participation in this course during the closure the student’s level of understanding is unknown and an incomplete grade will be assigned.
Students will be required to “complete” these courses for either a letter grade or a “P”. Students will have through:
May 30th to “complete” Term 3 incomplete grades
June 23rd to “complete” Term 4 incomplete grades
Prior to issuing an “I” staff should have had “two-way” communication with the parents and notified their principal.
We trust that instructors will grade with grace, understanding and flexibility.
Students who do not complete the essential standards prior to the end of the dates listed above will earn an F.
Howards Grove High School
3rd Term, 4th Term and 2nd Semester Grading:
Students will be assigned a traditional letter grade
Students can opt to have a letter grade of a D- or higher replaced with a “P” (Pass) with parent consent.
If some Dual Credit (CAPP) courses are opted for a P then college credit may not be given. Please have a conversation with your CAPP instructor before opting for a “P” in those courses.
“P” grades will represent the student has met the “essential standards” for the course, but they will not factor into GPA
“P” grade will be counted as the credit amount for that course.
Students will not be assigned an “F”, instead, students will be given “I” (Incomplete)
An “I” signifies that due to the COVID-19 school closures and lack of participation in this course during the closure the student’s level of understanding is unknown and an incomplete grade will be assigned.
Students will be required to “complete” these courses for either a letter grade or a “P” to earn credit. Students will have through:
May 30th to “complete” Term 3 incomplete grades
June 23rd to “complete” Term 4 incomplete grades
Students who do not complete the essential standards prior to the end of the dates listed above, may be required to repeat the course if necessary.
Prior to issuing a “I” staff should have had “two-way” communication with the parents and notified their principal.
We trust that instructors will grade with grace, understanding and flexibility.
A grade of “P” or “I” will not factor into GPA calculations.
Seniors enrolled in “online” credit recovery courses will be assigned a traditional letter grade. A passing grade is required for credit towards meeting the graduation requirement.
Advanced Placement Testing (AP tests)
- Advanced Placement (AP): For the 2019–20 exam only, students can take a 45-minute online free-response exam at home. Since some students have lost more instructional time than others, the exam will include only topics and skills most AP teachers and students covered in class by early March.
- Please use this link to access free exam practice courses offered by AP on YouTube: https://apstudents.collegeboard.org/coronavirus-updates#free-ap-classes
- Colleges support the shortened test solution and are committed to ensuring that AP students receive the credit they have worked to earn. For decades, colleges have accepted a shortened AP exam for college credit when groups of students have experienced emergencies.
- Students will be able to take these streamlined exams on any device including a computer, tablet, or smartphone. Submitting a photo of handwritten work will also be an option.
- The College Board recognizes that the digital divide could prevent some low-income and rural students from participating. Working with partners, the College Board will ensure that these students have the tools and connectivity they need to review AP content online and take the exam.
- If students need mobile tools or connectivity, they should reach out directly to the College Board to request assistance by completing the form at https://collegeboard.tfaforms.net/74.
