The Springville Saga
Springville K-8 Parent Newsletter (5/4/18)
Principal & Assistant Principal's Message
I want to take this opportunity to thank the incredible parent and community volunteers that we have at Springville K-8. We celebrated and honored our volunteers at our Volunteer Appreciation Event last Monday, April 23. The event was themed "You Are My Sunshine" to highlight the light and love that volunteers bring to our school.
Every day I see volunteers in our school doing so many important tasks that help make us stronger. Building a better world is part of the mission of an EL Education school, and while we work to help students understand the importance of service in our world, we also recognize that much of what we do as an EL Education school is possible because of our amazing volunteers. They help us in the classroom, support community events, and fundraise so we can bring wonderful experiences to our students. Our sincere thanks to all volunteers who help support our students and staff!
I also want to take this opportunity to reaffirm our commitment at Springville K-8 to create and nurture a safe and inclusive environment that supports the success of all students. Recent events in the Beaverton School District have been hurtful to many, and it's important to know that Springville staff are fully committed to our students and their families. Our students come to us as they are, and each one is welcomed, appreciated, and loved at Springville.
We hope you can join us at the end of the month for our Exhibition Night on May 24th at 6pm. Our PTO will also host their auction that same night, so it will be a wonderful night to celebrate our students and their learning. We look forward to seeing you soon!
Robin & Ellen

To clarify, the levy campaign is using numbers from 2017-18 regarding teachers funded by the levy, so it shows two teachers for Springville. With increased enrollment over the past year and into next year, the number for 2018-19 is seven teachers for Springville.
Parent leader Niran Kura and PE teacher Kellie Rice have organized a canvassing event for our Springville community on Saturday, May 5 from 12pm-2pm. If you are interested in participating, please email Niran at: neerukura@gmail.com. Anyone who volunteers to canvass will be knocking on doors of voters who have already polled as likely "yes" on the levy.

PTO Technology Campaign for Springville
Springville K-8 School opened in the fall of 2009 equipped with high quality instructional technology systems, including ceiling mounted projectors, built-in audio amplification systems, touch-sensitive interactive whiteboards, and iMac desktop computers in every room. Now, nine years later, it’s time for Springville K-8 to upgrade its instructional technology systems.
The original systems are showing their age; they are slow and difficult to use by today’s standards. Much equipment, including the classroom projection systems, are worn out. Instructional methods and practices have evolved, new mobile devices have been adopted, and instructional technology systems are capable of doing more than ever.
Beginning last spring, the Springville K-8 Technology Committee has been researching the direction the school will take in the deployment of classroom presentation systems. After several pilots in classrooms and reviewing the research findings, the Technology Committee has made a recommendation that Springville K-8 adopt a standard platform for its classroom presentation systems, consisting of a wall- or mobile-cart-mounted large screen monitor (flat panel display) and A/V streaming from Apple and Chrome devices. The new platform will be phased-in over time as funding is made available. The dated promethean board/ceiling mounted projection systems will be phased out as new systems are installed.
We are extremely fortunate to have a wonderfully supportive Springville Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) that has agreed to help with a technology fundraising campaign. You received letter in the mail last month regarding how you can help support this campaign.
Please feel free to contact me if you have questions about our technology project and the upgrades we are making to our wonderful school!

DISTRICT NEWS
2018-2019 School Calendar
Just a reminder… The start date for the 2018-2019 school year is Monday, August 27, 2018. This information was first published in June 2016 following the announcement of collaboration time and the addition of nine student days over three years.
Starting before Labor Day is a change in practice, so we want to make sure parents are aware. Please download the calendar below, or visit the District calendar webpage to view other important dates and calendars in several other languages.
State Assessment Score Reporting
The administration of our state assessment will take place between April 17 and June 1.
Beginning this year, state test scores are available in ParentVUE! You will be able to see your child’s test results sooner than in prior years with less impact on the environment. For the English Language and Math tests, a student’s score is available in ParentVUE two weeks after both parts of the test are completed. Science test scores are available in Parent VUE three days after the test is completed. The Testing Information tab in ParentVUE has links to additional information about your child’s scores. If you need assistance activating a ParentVUE account, please contact your child’s school. Please note: these scores are not currently available in the ParentVue phone app.
Students whose parents/guardians do not have an active ParentVUE account will receive a paper report of test scores. Paper score reports will be sent home with students on the last day of school. Score reports will be mailed over the summer for students with test results that arrive after the paper score reports are printed in June. Students with at least one parent/guardian with ParentVUE access may request a printed report by contacting Kay Jenkins by email at kay_jenkins@beaverton.k12.or.us or by phone at 503.356.4594.
Multilingual Instructional Materials Review
The Beaverton School District is currently involved in the English Language Proficiency Instructional Materials Adoption process K-12. The Project Team, comprised of community members, students, teachers, administrators and specialists has been meeting since September 2017 to review existing multilingual curriculum and practices in order to make curriculum and adoption recommendations to the School Board this Spring. The Beaverton School District reviews and updates its curriculum, instructional practices, and classroom materials according to Board policy and Oregon State Statute and Administrative Regulations.
The community, parents, students, and Beaverton School District staff are invited to review and provide input on instructional materials from 8-4pm the week of May 7-11, 2018 at the Multilingual Department Capital Center (18640 NW Walker Road, Entrance B, Beaverton, OR 97006). Materials will also be available for viewing from 5-7pm on Monday, May 7th and Thursday, May 10th in the same location. There will be an opportunity to submit feedback on the materials. Visit our website for all materials related to the adoption process.
