Newsletter Week 7 Term 4
St Joseph's School Waipukurau 30th November 2022
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Mauria te pono
Believe you can
That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe.
1 Timothy 4:10
Kia Ora whanau,
Welcome to week 7.
This weeks Whakatauki talks about believing in yourself. To believe in yourself you need to know that you can do it and have faith in yourself. You can do anything that you set your mind to, as long as you believe in yourself. This message has a big impact on the way we learn and excel in our learning. This whakatauki connects to the aspirations we have for our tamariki as risk takers. To be a risk taker we need to believe in ourselves to take the risk. This mindset of believing in yourself is evident in our St Josephs Learner profile. It is evidenced in the comments our teacher are making in their end of report student comments.
It is also evident that our teachers role model believing in themselves. In this regard It is with pride that we congratulate our teachers for being risk takers and achieving the following educator milestones this school year.
Mrs. Simpson & Mrs. Alexander - Having Life to the Full, TH 506 Catholic Social Teaching
Mrs. Chesswas - Just in time Math Certification
Whaea Sarah - Just in time Math Certification, Religious Education Foundation Certification
Mrs. Wagstaff - RE 502 - Spirituality for Teachers
Whaea Ngatel - Religious Education Leadership Certification, Maths Support Teacher Certification
Mrs. Hutchenson - Limited Authority to Teach Status (LAT)

Waipawa Top Schools - Fun in the Sun
Thank you to Keena’s mum and Board of Trustee member Michelle for coaching our St Josephs Top Team in last Friday afternoons fun activities in the sun. Aside from the bump on Hannah’s head the afternoon was a super success enjoyed by everyone who went along to support our teams.
Guthrie Smith High Ropes and Candadian Canoeing
What started out as a super early morning rise was all worth it as our Year 7&8’s headed north to Tutira to spend a day on the High Ropes and in the water canoeing. The super tired looks on their faces when they returned was evidence of a day well spent navigating multi ropes suspended high off the ground and becoming proficient paddlers in the water.
A huge thank you to our parents: Cameron's mum: Nicky, Ella’s mum: Sarah, Mariana’s dad: Andrew, Izac’s dad: Chris, Matua Matt and Whaea for making sure everyone was safe and had the best day!
Anticipating Jesus – The Season of Advent
When you think of the weeks leading up to Christmas, what images come to mind?
If yours is the experience of most people during the month of December, images of Christmas trees, shopping centres, carollers, candy canes probably jump to the front of your mind.
Yes, but there is more, The church gives us four weeks before Christmas that seem to run against the grain of excitement that surrounds us at this very busy time of year: the season of Advent.
Advent is a time of waiting and watching. The word Advent literally means “coming”. We wait for God’s coming into our midst now, just as the world waited so many years ago. Advent is a time to prepare for the birth of Jesus through prayer, reflection, and action.
If you are free this Sunday afternoon, you are welcome to join the CHB Foodbank team who will be packing food hampers for members of our local community in readiness for Christmas. Our students will be making cards at school that will also accompany the food hampers. See the flyer below for more details: 1 - 4pm at the St Mary’s Church Hall.
A big thank you to our PFG for coordinating what will be a fun Movie Night this Friday.
Another big thank you to our families who have returned their Community Consultation forms or who have made a time to come into school and have a chat with me about how ‘We’ as a school can be the best that we can be.
This coming Monday 5th December is our monthly Board of Trustees meeting. All whanau are welcome to attend.
Have a blessed rest of the week and weekend.

WINTER READING PROGRAMME
Today the children who took part in the Winter Reading Programme, received their free book. The selection of books was amazing! Very lucky kids!
We would like to say a big thank you to the CHB District Library for this programme and for the incentives that each child was given. Getting prizes for reading(which we love) . . . what an opportunity!
MESSAGE FROM OUR SCHOOL LEADERS
Tena koutou katoa
On Monday the Year 7 and 8s went to Guthrie Smith to do high ropes and canoeing. The trip was focussed on students gaining their confidence. We were lucky to have such a good day and to be able to have a swim in Tutira Lake.
Today the Year 7 and 8s are off to Splash Planet for the day as a reward for their Road Patrol duty this year. They have all earned this day and shown the value of responsibility.
Room 3 and Room 1 are off to the Dannevirke Domain tomorrow. The children will be doing activities which require them to work as a team and to follow instructions. They will also get to explore the area and participate in fun activities.
For the last couple of weeks room 5 and Whaea Jordan have been working on 5 fairy tale plays to present to some of the classes today and to parents on Friday.

CATHOLIC CHARACTER
This Sunday is the second week of four weeks which make up the season of Advent. Advent comes from the Latin word “adventus” meaning coming and this time is about both the coming of Christ at Christmas as in his historical birthday and the Second Coming to bring justice and harmony to the world.
What is the second candle of Advent Catholic?
The second candle, also purple, represents faith. It is called the “Bethlehem Candle” as a reminder of Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem.
