Three Tips for Brain Based Learning
Modeling higher thinking skills, chunking instruction, and giving brain breaks are important strategies using the best of neuroscience to foster learning.
1. Model Higher Thinking Skills
Help students evaluate the reliability of information, the importance of particular details and the quality of their own work as an investment in executive functioning.
2. Teach Smaller Chunks
Young brains work best with no more than four chunks of information at a time. Spend 4-8 minutes on more complex material and 8-15 minutes on less complex material.
3. Include Brain Breaks
Movement stimulates dopamine and noradrenaline which prime the brain for learning.
