Week in a Peek
Ms. Cindy, Ms. Cathy, Ms. Heather
This week was super busy! We all enjoyed dressing up in costumes to go trick-or-treating at Yeokum. On Thursday, we went to the High School to see Beauty and the Beast. The children really enjoyed the songs and dancing! By Friday we were all ready to relax at school after coming down from the sugar high!
Process vs. Product Artwork
In our classroom, we focus on the process that goes into creating artwork. This means that each child creates a unique work of art that may not always look like... and sometimes may not look like much of anything! That is okay. It's really, really tempting to walk up to a child and say, "What is it?" or simply, "That's pretty!"- there are other options that can inspire more conversation. Here is a great blog post that goes more into detail. http://www.artfulparent.com/2010/02/how-to-talk-about-art.html Some examples include noticing what kind of colors they used, and noticing the shapes you see on their paper. Simply saying, "Tell me about your picture" is another great conversation starter. See our bulletin board that is a work in progress for more information on process-vs-product artwork!
Drumbeats!
This week we worked on being able to segment our favorite words- our names! Counting syllables is an important pre-reading skill, and we used drums to help us identify the individual sounds. This also helped us practice an important social emotional skill, taking turns. Each child got to count the drum beats in their name twice before passing the drum to the next person. We introduced the word "syllable", so ask your child at dinner tonight if they can tell you the syllables in their name. If they have trouble, try clapping it with them! You can practice listening for syllables in other family members names as well. The clapping helps them be able to "feel" the different syllables and better identify them.
Colin sorted objects into groups based on their starting sound- did they start with a /z/ or /m/ sound?
Kaylynn pretended to make cookies for everybody- yummy!
Destin found a worm on the playground and carried it to safety in the grass.
