February Newsletter
Hardly a day goes by without me exclaiming how wonderful the students at CMS are! While there will always be problems associated with 600 adolescents in one building, our students’ willingness and ability to engage in solving problems is remarkable and commendable - they truly are wonderful.
Each year, at about the mid-year point, our school runs Options Day. Students choose learning activities that are outside of their classroom for ½ day, and work in small groups with their teachers for the other ½ day. Students could choose from a wide variety of art activities, physical education, baking, and service opportunities. Comments from the community organizations where our students volunteered were incredibly positive about our students and the way they managed their service work. Options Day provides our students with the enjoyment of learning, and some great learning conversations with their teachers.
Our February calendar is full. Many classes will be going on learning trips and our basketball teams will continue their league play. We believe taking learning outside the walls of the school helps deepen the learning, and we work hard to ensure that our trips truly extend learning. In some cases, trips are expensive and teachers organize fundraising opportunities. In all cases, if a family finds it difficult to pay for an event, please let the teachers know so that we can ensure that ALL students can participate.
Also in February will be our Book Fair in the library and our one week focus on kindness, Pink Week. The Book Fair will be open to families on Thursday, February 14 until 8:30 p.m. for families to come and browse and buy some books. Some of the profits from the sales of books comes back to our library, which we always spend to improve our library. Thanks for your support. During Pink Week, our school will be focussing on kindness. With the growth of social media as a force in the lives of students, it is increasingly important that we maintain steady focus on teaching about kindness.
Some of you may have seen the news article about Rogers Hometown Hockey coming to Steinbach in March. Our school will be hosting a school assembly with Rogers Hometown Hockey for Grades 6 & 7 students. The event will take place on Thursday, March 7 in the afternoon (1:10 - 2:15). We want to make this a real community event, so have invited Stonybrook Middle School Grade 6 and Grade 7 students to join our Grade 6 and Grade 7 students for this one hour event.
We are proud of the work our students do. They work hard on their learning, whether that is in academics, Phys Ed, practical or theoretical, or learning about making a difference in the world, our students are putting their best foot forward. As they grow to be adults, I am confident that our future is in good hands.
