African Wild Dogs
African wild dogs, also known as painted dogs, are incredibly social creatures. They live in carefully organized packs in which each dog has a specified job, from hunter to pup baby-sitter. The dogs rely on each other and are one of the only wild species to care for their sick and old.
ENDANGERD
Between 2,000 and 5,000 of these dogs remain in the wild, mostly in game preserves or national parks.
SIZE
The average African wild dog weighs between 37 and 80 pounds and measures 24 to 30 inches high.
African wild dogs can live up to 10 years. Savannas, grasslands and open woodlands . African wild dogs hunt antelope, zebras, wildebeest, springboks, gazelles . wild dogs are only found in Africa south of the Sahara Desert.
WILD
The African wild dog is threatened with extinction due to reasons such as: loss of habitat, hunting by humans, ecological imbalances, poisoning by ranchers and road deaths. The African wild dog population numbers about 5,000 at present.
