Pompeii
Mount Vesuvius was the destroyer of the city called Pompeii. It erupted in 79 AD, and started with ash rains. Then, it was shot at by volcanic rock, and burned. Finally, it was covered by volcanic ash, a bunch of people died. It was a catastrophe.

This isn't the actual event, we didn't have phone then, but here is an animation of what it might have been like.
Vesuvius Strikes Again
Vesuvius also destroyed some aircraft in WWII when it erupted again, I don't think anyone died then.
