SMS Weekly Update

This Week's Recap
This week our students also took their NWEA tests in Reading, Math, and Science. We are incredibly proud of the hard work that our kids put in to making sure that they did their absolute best. We are not looking for perfection on these tests, rather we are looking for progress towards their goals. Every student completed a goal setting sheet before they tested and each day that they met their growth goal, they were given either 1 ticket if they improved their score even by one point, or they were given 2 tickets if they met their projected RIT growth goal. They were able to cash those tickets in for snacks during their lunch period each day. Congratulations to all of our students on their hard work to ensure we have the most accurate representation of scores for our students and our school. We will be sharing the results of the competition between the three middle schools in the upcoming weeks when all testing has been completed to see which middle school had the highest percentage of their students meeting their goals. Regardless of how we place, we are incredibly proud of our students for their hard work during testing this week.

SMS Winter College & Career Corner- New Masterclass options next month
Our students here at Stevenson Middle School have been busy completing their EDP’s (Educational Development Plans) through the Xello platform. A big part of the plan focuses on what three future careers each student is currently interested in. Students are to explore these careers using the Xello platform, finding out what level of education each of these careers requires, salary, benefits, and the pros and cons of each of their future career choices.
Our “Masterclass” series continues! This month we are offering FOUR different Masterclasses to our students.
February 1st, we have author Eman Saleh coming in to present a Masterclass on “How to be an Author.”
February 8th, we have a panel of high school seniors coming in to do a Masterclass with our eighth grade students on “How to Excel in High School.”
Tentatively, February 16th, we have City of Wayne Chief Judge, Breeda O’Leary coming in to do a Masterclass with seventh and eighth grade students on “How our Local Government Works.”
February 17th, we have a Masterclass on “Apartment Maintenance.”
These in person Masterclasses allow students the opportunity to learn about and ask questions from people who are currently working in the field, and “hear it from the horse's mouth” as they say. The Masterclass series has been a huge hit with our kids. We are so grateful for these dedicated professionals who have voluntarily taken time out of their busy schedules to come in and present to our middle schoolers!
Any students interested in attending a Masterclass needs to reserve their spot on the links on their Student Hub page (also linked at the bottom of this newsletter).
High School Counselors Visit With Our 8th Grade Students Monday January 30th
The high school counselors will be coming to meet with all of our eighth graders regarding high school scheduling on Monday, January 30. The counselors will be in all of the eighth grade science classrooms. The high school counselors will be presenting to students how to enter their elective course requests via their student connect account. They will also be showing our students a video and answering any questions that they might have regarding high school.
There will be a “Future Freshman Night” at both Wayne and John Glenn on Thursday February 2nd for all eighth grade students and their parents/guardians. Students will be given a flier about the Future Freshman Night to take home that has all of the details included in it! The flyers are pictured below.
8th Grade Farewell Dance Important Information
Please read the information below. This is the same information that was emailed to all 8th grade families earlier today.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Parents/Guardians and 8th graders,
We are now in the final semester of your student’s middle school experience! To honor our 8th grade class, Stevenson will host an 8th grade “Farewell Dance” on Friday, June 2, 2023 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Since this celebration is honoring the current 8th grade class and their advancement to high school, we want to make sure that students are working hard to achieve their highest possible final grades. To help curb an early onset of spring fever, we are adhering to the following policy:
Any student receiving three or more days of suspension (CUMULATIVE) between February 1 and June 2nd may not be allowed to attend the “Farewell Dance” subject to administrator discretion. This policy includes both In-School and Out-of-School suspensions for any infraction (including tardiness).
While this is a special celebration for 8th graders only, it is not considered a formal event. The expected dress is business casual, which may include dresses, slacks and dress shirts.
Student Code of Conduct expectations must be followed when choosing your clothing for the “Farewell Dance.” Students should be able to dress appropriately for this event without incurring any excessive expense. Students wearing revealing clothing, such as short dresses/skirts, low cut tops, strapless tops/dresses and sagging pants will be excluded from entry on the evening of the dance. Additionally, no limousines will be allowed on school property.
As of today, all 8th graders are eligible to attend the “Farewell Dance.” Please talk with your student about making good choices to ensure he/she will remain eligible to participate in the dance. Please discuss the expectations located on the reverse side of this letter with your son or daughter.
After reviewing the expectations, please submit the acknowledgement Google Form below before your student purchases his/her ticket starting May 18h. Your student will not be allowed to purchase a ticket for the “Farewell Dance” if he/she does not complete this acknowledgement form signed by you.
We appreciate your support and hope that all 8th graders will attend the “Farewell Dance.” If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Stevenson at 734-419-2350.
Sincerely,
Kim Doman
Principal
