Asthma in School Age Children
Part 1 ~ Overview
Helping Parents Understand this Disease.
This is the first in a series of articles about asthma in children. Since asthma is one of the most common diseases in children as well as one of the most common reasons children miss school, the Lenoir City Schools Office of Coordinated School Health will send out periodic newsletters to parents and guardians regarding this disease. To encourage participation on your part, we will have an incentive program for those who read these articles. Continue reading to see how to participate.
What is Asthma?
Asthma is a chronic or lifetime disease that affects the air passages in the lungs. The air passages, or bronchiole become inflamed, making it difficult for air to flow freely. While there is no cure for asthma, it can be managed. This management includes using medication such as inhalers and avoiding triggers that can cause an asthmatic attack. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Prevention and Control), one in eleven children has asthma. Diagnosing asthma in young children is difficult as some of the same symptoms (coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath) are often associated with colds and other respiratory ailments.
