From the Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,

What a great day our students had yesterday with Mission Day. Even though it was

overcast the students had a terrific time and a significant amount of money was raised

for the Missions. Many thanks to all of the families for supporting this event.

Please keep the Year 4 students in your thoughts and prayers as they will be making their

First Holy Communion on Sunday June 19 at 9:30 at St Columba’s Church.

The Cross Country will be held Tuesday June 14 and students are asked to bring a spare change of clothes as there is the possibility of rain. If it does rain students will be able to change into dry clothes. I would also like to take the opportunity to wish all the Yr 3-6 students all the best with the cross country and I know that they will try their hardest no matter what the weather conditions.

A reminder that there is a P&F meeting next Tuesday June 14 at 7:00pm in the staffroom. The

meeting will also be available online.

We will be celebrating NAIDOC week during Week 10 of this Term.

Students will finish the term on Friday July 1 and return to school in Term 3 on Tuesday July 19.

God Bless and keep safe.

St Columba’s Feast Day & Bishop’s Lifelink Celebration

To celebrate St Columba’s Feast Day and the launch of the Bishop’s Lifelink Appeal all students wore free dress on Wednesday.

The Y1-6 classes began the day with a St Columba’s Feast Day Mass in the Church.

Students were encouraged to bring in spare change to play the Mission Game stalls organised by our Year 6 students during lunchtime. The $1,028.70 raised from the event will go towards the Bishop’s Lifelink charities. Well done St Columba’s!

St Columba

Yesterday we celebrated the feast of St. Columba.

St Columba is the patron Saint of our parish and school. Along with St Patrick and St Brigid, he is one of Ireland’s three famous Saints. He was known for his kindness especially to children and animals and was instrumental in the establishment of many monasteries throughout Ireland and then later Scotland, where he became known as the Apostle of Scotland.

Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum (KS:CPC)

The Department for Education Child protection in schools, early childhood education and care services policy states that ‘all children and young people in the department’s preschools and schools will access the approved child protection curriculum’.

Keeping Safe is the Child Protection Program that all CEWA schools follow.

The KS:CPC teaches children and young people to recognise abuse, tell a trusted adult, understand what is appropriate and inappropriate touching and ways of keeping themselves safe.

Themes

The curriculum is based on two main themes which are presented through topics and activities.

· Theme 1: We all have the right to be safe

· Theme 2: We can help ourselves to be safe by talking to people we trust.

Focus Areas

The two themes are explored through four Focus Areas, which are examined in growing complexity in accordance with the age of the learners.

1. The right to be safe

2. Relationships

3. Recognising and reporting abuse

4. Protective strategies.

More information can be found on the KS:CPC website: http://tiny.cc/KSCPC-ParentCarerInfo

P&F News

Hello Everyone,

I hope everyone had a lovely long weekend.

The P&F have been busy alongside some of our amazing teachers (I'm looking at you Mr Chatt) putting together what is going to be an amazing initiative for all the students at St Columba's. Introducing to you, the St Columbas School Garden.

Aim: To enhance student learning through a connection with nature.

Purpose: To establish a calming outdoor area for students of all ages to build, maintain, grow and learn from their experiences.

Educational Gains (examples):

- Links to the Quality Improvement Plan for Early Childhood Education

- Community Involvement/Parent Partnerships

- Increased interaction between children, teachers and volunteers will encourage growing, interpersonal and cooperative skills and a unique style of social skill development that will follow children throughout their lives

- Sustainability for the school/environmental stewardship

- Whatever the garden produces, can be utilised by the canteen (research shows that children are significantly more likely to eat what they grow).

If you would like to know more, or to get involved in this project, please reach out. We will be looking for parents volunteers to help with the groundworks and foundational elements of the garden project. More information on this to come via your class representatives.

Our next meeting will be held next Tuesday 14th June at 7pm. For those of you that would like to attend, I have included the Zoom meeting link. Otherwise, please send all your comments, ideas, and feedback to your class representatives.
