Sugar Skulls - El Día de Los Muertos
¡Hola Padres!
I hope that you are having a great October month. In our Spanish class, we are exploring Colorado State Standard World Languages #2: Cultures. During this month in Mexico, this is a special time because they are preparing to celebrate the Day of the Dead. EL DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS
The Day of the Dead is an incredible holiday celebrated in Mexico and other countries to honor those who have died. It is a happy celebration where relatives prepare altars (ofrendas) of particular objects that their deceased loved ones enjoyed. They take many things to the cemetery on November 1st and November 2nd and celebrate – sing and dance and talk about loved ones. Objects include the marigold flower, tamales, particular foods, sugar skulls and photos. Many families spend numerous hours preparing bread, food, and altars.
People prepare art depicting many things as skeletons and skull images. It is not meant as a scary holiday. The most popular is a sugar skull where you make a skull with pure sugar (with a little water and meringue powder). Then after the mold is cast, different bright frostings decorate the skull. Click on this link to find out more:
http://www.mexicansugarskull.com/sugar_skulls/instructions.html
In Spanish class, we are going to make sugar skulls, which is a part of this very special holiday in Hispanic culture. We will use the recipe that is on the link above to mold them and let them dry. Kids can take their skulls home at the end of the week. They are recommended for decoration and not for eating. They are edible though, and if eaten can result in a tummy ache. If you would like to continue the project at home, you may decorate with icing, pretty paper, or sequins and/or beads.
If you have any questions about the Day of the Dead or the Sugar Skulls Project, feel free to email me at jennifer.chavez@deltaschools.com
Muchas gracias,
