The Latest Staffing News
2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Lea Russelle will become Washington's Math Coach/Interventionist next year. This is a new position at all CUSD 200 elementary schools next year. Mrs. Russelle's experience teaching multiple grade levels and working with English Language Learners makes her an excellent candidate for this position.
This spring we bid farewell to Nurse Jackie Corso. While we will be very sad to see Nurse Jackie go, we are happy that she is becoming the certified nurse at Wheaton North High School! Jackie's position as Washington's certified nurse will be filled by Mrs. Jody Gosain. Mrs. Gosain has worked in CUSD200 for a number of years; this year she worked as a staff nurse at Bower and Wheaton North.
The following staff updates were shared in previous Knightly News editions. We are reprinting in case you missed them:
Barbara Harper, 2nd grade teacher, will be retiring at the end of this school year. Kindergarten teacher, Jenny Coover will be moving to 2nd grade next year. Mrs. Coover previously taught 2nd and 3rd grade at Longfellow School.
Reading teacher, Jamie Alley Longhini, will move to the AM/PM kindergarten position next year.
4th grade teacher, Dan Cerny, will join the reading team next year. Mr. Cerny worked for several years as a reading specialist at Franklin Middle School before coming to Washington.
Resource teacher, Amy Knorring, will retire at the end of this school year. Beth DiRienzo is currently a resource teacher split between Washington and Pleasant Hill; she will return to Washington full time next year.
In August, we will be joined by a new 2nd grade teacher (replacing Mrs. Russelle), a new PACE teacher (replacing Mr. Ourada) and a new half-time resource teacher (replacing Mrs. DiRienzo). These staff members and any other staffing changes will be included in the August back-to-school Knightly News

Thinking of Next Year
As June approaches, I know that many of your thoughts are already turning toward next school year. Soon, I will begin working with the teachers on student placement for next year. Since students move in and out of our attendance area and staffing can change over the summer, the process will continue into August. We do our best to develop classes that provide the best opportunities for optimal teaching and learning. Due to the complex nature of developing class lists, it is impossible to accommodate requests for specific classroom teachers. The following quote is from the Parent/Student Handbook:
Many professional hours of planning and preparation are spent in the spring to ensure the most appropriate class placement for each child. To change even one student can upset the balance that was very carefully created by teachers and principals. Therefore, requests for a child's placement with a specific teacher are not invited.
We do value your input, and we invite you to share your thoughts and impressions about your child's needs. Feel free to email me at jennifer.craig@cusd200.org. It will be most helpful to receive any information you have to share by mid-May. Please understand that class placements will not be finalized and communicated to parents until sometime in August.
Thank you,
Jennifer Craig

Field Day Was Fabulous and a New Tradition Was Born!
The winning team by a long shot was the staff team: Angela Sheppard (5th grade teacher), Jennifer Harris (teacher's assistant), J.J. Babb (LLC Director), and David Ourada (PACE teacher/teacher's assistant). Way to go, Knights!
A special thanks to the dedicated parent team who made a great showing - Ann Marie Halter, Lynn Kenning, Eric Ostensen, and Steve Karlovitz, who tossed aside his flip-flops and actually ran the course barefoot! What dedication!!
Our student teams were selected via a raffle of willing students. They made a great effort and had a lot of fun competing against the adults. Way to go!
3rd grade team: Lexi Kolomay, Brielle Williams, Logan Ciabattari, and Oscar Beltran
4th grade team: Aida Mondavi Sobbi, Natalie Boba, Jordan Wilhelm, and Luke Benson
5th grade team: Valeria Salazar, Evelyn Winchell, Randy Chau, and Drew Metanchuk
Thanks to all who made Field Day fabulous this year!
