MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL HORN
As with the close of every school year, this year has many deadlines and details to be aware of. I’d like to highlight a few of them here and I encourage you to read the Digest carefully.
Kindergarten Registration
Registration for kindergarten this year will be done online. If you know of anyone in your neighborhood with a child entering kindergarten this year, please tell me to register online at pps.net/kinderenroll. More information is below my message.
Returning Student Materials (including from lockers)
Many students and parents have been asking about this. PPS is initiating a district-wide process that will allow you to pick up materials during the week of June 8. I will have specific details in next week’s Dolphin Digest about when you and/or your student will be able to pick up the materials at school. Staff will put all student materials, including items from lockers, in bags identified with the student’s name. Windows of time will be designated by alphabet when the materials will be available for pick up.
Non-staff members will not be allowed to enter the building and only a limited number of staff will be allowed in the building at any given time. We’ll have a well-organized process but your patience will be very much appreciated as we engage in yet another unprecedented endeavor.
Vandalism
There has been a troubling increase of vandalism across Portland Public Schools and unfortunately Arleta has seen an increase as well. I have been in touch with district officials and with Portland Police about the vandalism. I have also spoken directly to groups of people gathered at the school, predominately non-Arleta students. I would ask that you speak to children you know, including our high school aged children, about this situation. I believe the people committing the vandalism are members of our community, and recently gathered photographic evidence that supports this. And I believe we can impact their behavior by sharing how offensive, and expensive, this behavior is.
I will continue to work with others to address the vandalism and expect you will see improvement soon. Please call the police non-emergency number, (503) 823-3333, if you witness someone vandalizing the school.
Thank you,
John Horn
Arleta Principal
KINDER REGISTRATION IS OPEN
Click here to access this information translated into the 5 supported languages
Paper registration packets will be available in multiple languages at meal sites starting Wednesday, May 27th.
Coming soon: The Early Learner Programs team is developing a family-centered kindergarten transition plan. We know families are worried about the start to school, especially kinders. We’re planning on a slower, more family-friendly approach this year. Early registration will ensure that families stay in the loop on updated plans for the start of school.

RUN FOR THE ARTS - HOME EDITION
Run for the Arts is typically hosted at Arleta and 40 other local schools to raise money for arts programs, supplies, and experiences for students. This year many school's runs were cancelled, so Run for the Arts is hosting a virtual run/walk/dance party on May 30th 1-1:30pm with any funds raised going to the Community Matching Fund, which supports schools with greater than 50% low-income students and struggle to raise money for the arts. While Arleta won't directly benefit from the funds, we encourage your families to participate in this fun event and donate if you can. There is no cost to register

STATE PROGRAM OFFERS FAMILIES HELP TO PAY FOR FOOD
As our community deals with fallout of the coronavirus pandemic, we want to make Portland Public Schools families aware of a state benefit to help pay for food. The Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer program, or P-EBT, is available to help families offset the cost of meals that would have been consumed at school. It is administered by the Oregon Department of Human Services.
The P-EBT benefit is available to families with a student who qualifies for free or reduced-price meals and any student enrolled in a Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) school. For those families:
- Households who qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Association Program (SNAP), which offers food benefits to eligible, low-income individuals and families, will have benefits automatically deposited to their existing EBT accounts. There is no additional paperwork to submit to receive P-EBT benefits.
- Households who currently qualify for free or reduced-price meals or attend a CEP school will receive an Oregon Trail Card in the mail along with instructions on how to activate or refuse benefits. There is no additional paperwork to submit to receive P-EBT benefits.
For families not currently eligible and seeking benefits:
- Households financially impacted by COVID-19 may qualify for SNAP. See the program’s website to learn more.
- Families who have experienced income loss may now be eligible for free or reduced-price school meals. Apply online at pps.net/nutrition.
For assistance with submitting a meal application, please contact the PPS Meal Benefits Office: mealbenefits@pps.net or 503-916-3402.
For Pandemic-EBT questions, please contact the Oregon Department of Human Services.

BIKE TO BOOKS DESIGN CONTEST
Youth across Multnomah County are invited to design bike lane art for Portland's streets
Students living in Multnomah County, from Pre-Kindergarten to 12th grade, can participate in the design contest until May 31. Design pages are available for download or you can request a copy to be mailed to you in nglish, Spanish, Chinese and Vietnamese.
Once your design is complete, scan or take a photo of both sides of your form and email it to PBOT at biketobooks@portlandoregon.gov. We accept .jpgs, .pngs, and .pdfs. Make sure your image is clear and a higher resolution if possible. Make sure to keep the original copy.
Entries must be the original artwork of children in the following grade brackets: Pre-Kindergarten to 2nd grade, 3rd through 6th grade, and 7th through 12th grade. Multiple entries are welcome. Grand prize winners will have their bike lane art installed on a Portland street by PBOT’s striping crews.

2. Amazon has a similar program, called AmazonSmile. Select "Arleta School PTA" as your charitable organization to receive donations when you shop Amazon. Once you sign up, just go to smile.amazon.com to do your usual Amazon shopping. While there is no app, you can create a shortcut on your phone by going to smile.amazon.com in your browser, tap the Share button, then tap Add to Homescreen.
3. Donate your redeemable cans and bottles to Arleta through Bottle Drop. Grab a blue bag from the school office and FILL it up then take it to a Bottle Drop site, OR email arletabottledrop@gmail.com and someone will come pick it up. (Arleta pays a fee for the bags, so let's fill them to the top!)
