We are about to start our Informational Writing unit. In this unit, we will be creating our own Animal Research Report. Students will research their chosen animal and create an informational book on their animal.

Math
The students started the year off strong by learning about coordinate grids, numerical patterns, line graphs, and reading data. They have also been introduced to the order of operations and have been practicing multi-digit multiplication and multi-digit division. The next units of study for the second quarter will focus on operations with fractions and decimals as students learn different strategies to solve problems.

Social Emotional Learning: Wellness Wednesdays
We are continuing to provide weekly lessons on social emotional topics, such as understanding emotions and being kind to others. Each lesson includes a video, read aloud, or activity that students and teachers complete during their morning meeting. Wednesday afternoons, our School Counselors and Social Worker host virtual “Connect Time” to review the lesson’s content with students and answer any questions they may have. This time is held on Microsoft Teams to support social distancing and provide our students who are remote the opportunity to participate. Our first quarter included the following topics: emotions, mindfulness, goal setting, resiliency, identity, perspective, empathy, and hand brain model. The Student Services team is always glad to speak further with you if you would like more information on the upcoming topics and lessons.
Counselor Corner
How we are supporting students:
As we made the transition from full remote to Plan B with children both in the building and still fully remote we have had the opportunity to see our students through individual counseling (both on MS Teams and in-person) for a variety of needs, supplemental guidance lessons during encore time, and through check-ins.
Need support from our Team:
You can submit a parent referral for your child through this link or by contacting Kendall Burris (Grades K-2) at Kendall.Burris@Cabarrus.k12.nc.us or Monica Ebert (Grades 3-5) at Monica.Ebert@Cabarrus.k12.nc.us.
Holiday Assistance
Are you in need of assistance for your family this holiday season? If so, our student services team would love to connect you with local agencies who are willing to help. Please COMPLETE THIS BRIEF FORM to inquire about application opportunities. For questions or concerns, please contact Kaitlyn Armstrong at kaitlyn.armstrong@cabarrus.k12.nc.us or 980-721-2123. Attendance
We understand that attendance policies can be very confusing this year, especially considering all the changes that have occurred. Here is a summary document of CCS Attendance Guidelines for your reference (Spanish here). As always, please reach out to our team for support in understanding and/or applying these policies.
