Library News by Mrs. Browning, Librarian
A big thank you to all who donated items for the Gulf Coast Humane Society. They were truly grateful to receive much needed items for the shelter.
Be sure to check out the book fair in the library the week of February 28-March 7. We will also be open during open house on Tuesday, March 5. If you are interested in helping with the fair and haven’t sent your volunteer note back, please do so ASAP. You may also call the library to ask about opportunities to volunteer.
I am really excited to bring another award-winning children’s author to our library. On April 29, Mr. Jerry Pallotta will be our special guest. The students are super excited, and his Who Would Win? Series fly off the library shelves! He also writes some awesome alphabet books that are loaded with facts. Order forms will be sent home the week of February 25. If your student wishes to order a book from Mr. Pallotta, please fill out the form and return it to Mrs. Browning on or before March 27.

Positive Behavior Support by Mrs. Cristan, Assistant Principal
The library is a truly special place at Flour Bluff Elementary! It provides great opportunities for our students to explore their interests through books and helps to nurture the love of reading. These are the PBIS expectations for the library:
Expectation 1 Follow Directions Listen and follow directions. After checkout, sit at the tables and read quietly.
Expectation 2 Be Polite Enter quietly. Line up correctly and wait your turn. Speak to others with a respectful voice. Say "please, thank you, and excuse me". Expectation 3 Be Safe Respect others' space. Sit at tables correctly. Use shelf marker correctly. Expectation 4 Be Prepared Bring necessary books and pink slips to the library. By following these expectations in the library, we can provide everyone the opportunity to experience the wonderful world of reading.
Counselor's Corner by Mrs. Villarreal
. For the next few weeks we will be reviewing the Character Traits we have covered so far: RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, KINDNESS, and INITIATIVE. With the STAAR exam and GT testing right around the corner, I will be shifting the focus to stress management and test taking strategies. Stress can inhibit a student’s ability to absorb, retain, and recall information. Anxiety creates a kind of noise in the brain that blocks our ability to retrieve what’s stored in memory. It greatly impairs our ability to comprehend and reason. We will discuss ways to reduce stress by practicing deep breathing, using guided imagery, and using positive self-talk. We will also be talking about things students can do to prepare for the exam such as getting enough sleep, eating a healthy breakfast, and having a positive attitude. All of our students have been taught test taking strategies, so we will be having group discussions regarding these approaches. The more we talk about the test, the more comfortable our students will be taking it.
Things to discuss at home with your child:
*Talk to your child about stress and ways to reduce it.
*Ask your child to tell you what test taking strategies they have learned in class.
*Discuss how having an early bed time can help your child have the stamina to focus for several hours.
G/T testing is scheduled for April 2018 Permission to tests forms will be sent home starting 3/1/18. Please turn them in as soon as possible. Deadline is 3/30/18 Please call 694-9593 for more information.
CURRICULUM HIGHLIGHTS by Mrs. Hoover
The STAAR tests are approaching. Here are “Some Test-Taking Tips” for students. 1. Have a Positive Attitude-Approach the big test as you'd approach a giant jigsaw puzzle. It might be tough, but you can do it! A positive attitude goes a long way toward success. Remember you are all CHAMPIONS!! 2. Make a Plan-The weeks leading up to the test you have been practicing with your teacher the skills that will be on your test. Make sure you are completing all your assignments and homework leading up to the test. 3. The Night Before the Test-Remember, your brain and body need sleep to function well, so don't stay up late! 4. The Morning of the Test-Did you know that you think better when you have a full stomach? So don't skip breakfast the morning of the test and get to school early.
5. Manage Your Time-The STAAR is a timed 4 hour test so make sure to stay focused and keep a good pace while working each problem.
6. I'm Stuck-When you come to a tricky problem don't get worried or frustrated. Reread the question to make sure you understand it, and then try to solve it the best way you know how. If you're still stuck, circle it and you can come back to it later. 7. Multiple-Choice Questions-The process of elimination can help you choose the correct answer in a multiple-choice question. Start by crossing off the answers that couldn't be right. Then spend your time focusing on the possible correct choices before selecting your answer. 8. Neatness Counts-Make sure all your bubbles are bubbled neatly and there are no stray marks on the scantron. On the essay portion of the writing test, make sure the readers will be able to read your handwriting. 9. I'm Done! Not so fast - when you complete the last item on the test, remember that you're not done yet. First, check the clock and go back to review your answers, making sure that you didn't make any careless mistakes. Follow these test tips, and you'll know you did your best!
Nurse's Corner by Nurse Cheryl
FLU SEASON CAN LAST AS LATE AS MAY! With that in mind, it is not too late to get a flu vaccine. We are doing everything possible at school to prevent the spread of illness, including; extra sanitizing procedures, encouraging good hand washing and cough covering techniques, and adhering strictly to our fever policy. Our policy is that of the Texas Department of State Health Services, and states that a student must be “fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever suppressing medications. Fever is a temperature of 100° Fahrenheit (37.8° Celsius) or higher.” Please help us keep our district as healthy as possible by also following this guideline as well as encouraging good personal hygiene. Also, if a student needs to take any medication at school, prescribed or over-the-counter, do not allow your student to bring the medication to school him/herself. All medication needs to be brought to and from school by a parent. Thank you for helping keep all of our Hornets healthy! Please call Nurse Cheryl if you have any questions or concerns. 361-694-9560.
