The B.Y.E. Buzz
Bernice Young Elementary Newsletter 10/5/20
Principal Corner
We are excited to announce that we will be having the Younglings First Lego League Challenge Robotics Team. This is an opportunity for 3rd-5th grade students. See the application below. Applications are due by October 9th. Unfortunately, we will not be able to take all of those that apply.
Springdale Schools will have "remote learning days" on October 16th and October 19th. Students will be working from home these days. We will be practicing for our remote learning that will occur the Monday and Tuesday before Thanksgiving Break. The two remote learning days in October will be the last days of the first quarter. We will send work home that your child should be able to complete independently. Please wait for more specific information from the classroom teachers.
Thank you and let me know if you have any questions!
PTA News
The "B.Y.E. Color Run" will be moved to the spring semester.
Thank you for helping us bless the staff during the conference week.
We need some pictures for the Yearbook. This is more challenging since we have limited access to visitors. We are specifically asking for you to upload a picture of your child on the first day of school AND/OR pictures from eating lunch with your child. As restrictions lift and we can have parents inside the building, we will ask that you take and upload more pictures for the yearbook.
There are two easy ways to submit your pictures:

Notes from Mrs. Nelson
October’s Counseling Lesson Theme- Safety
Throughout the month of October I will be in classrooms discussing safety and how to make healthy choices with help from the Empower Me! curriculum. Empower Me! teaches children to identify their safety net of trusted adults and encourages them to reach out to one of those adults if anyone is trying to break their safety rules. I encourage you to talk about safety and making healthy choices with your children. Below are some tips to help start the conversation and keep your kids safe.
Ask your student about their 5 trusted adults.
Discuss their safety rules online and offline.
Make sure your children are on safe and secure websites or phone apps.
Discuss what they should do if someone is being unsafe online or in real life.
Discuss the difference between a healthy choice and an unhealthy choice.
Cooler Weather
- Write names in jackets/coats so that we can return them if they are misplaced
- Please pull all the way forward if dropping off on the side of the school. Students can enter the building using the door closest to their car if it is cold or rainy. They will walk inside the building to their class. If all cars stay in line, pull forward, and unload at the same time it can keep our line moving.
Notes from the Nurse
Flu Shots will be given on Thursday, October 8th. We will not have parents/volunteers at the clinic this year. We will have shots only; no mist will be given. If your child attends on M/W/F you may bring them at 8:30 on October 8th to get their shot.
Flu shot forms were sent home last week. Both flu forms must be completed front and back. Please include insurance information and sign. If you need a new flu form, please email nurse Amy at aschultz@sdale.org
It is important for students to eat breakfast so they are ready to learn. Remember there is free breakfast in the cafeteria for ALL students until the end of December. Students that want to eat should report to the cafeteria as soon as they arrive.
Covid Reporting
go.sdale.org/covid
If a staff or student tests positive for COVID or has a COVID exposure please complete the form at the site above. Someone will call you and we will move forward with the next steps provided by the Arkansas Department of Health. They make decisions regarding class/grade/school closures. It will be helpful if you notify the school administration or nurse as well.
When we have a positive exposure in the building, we will notify all parents via letter/automated phone call. If your child is directly affected, you will get a personal phone call describing the next steps.
See daily Covid Numbers for the district and other Covid information at the district website.
