McKinley Monthly
August 2017
A Word from Mrs. Hoffmann
Dear Families,
As we move into August, things start to kick up a bit more here after a bit of a lazy summer. Our GE Community Day was fabulous! We are grateful to the more than 100 volunteers, parents, teachers, buildings and grounds workers, and family members all contributing to the many projects in and outside of the building. Spaces were cleaned and organized, painted, landscaped, refreshed! What a way to realize the impact of many hands working together!
Teachers are continuing their summer professional development and also getting into their classrooms to prepare for the year. The staff development for the new math curriculum has invigorated many! Keep your eyes open for parent opportunities to learn more about the new program.
We have two staffing changes to announce: Tracy Carus has taken a district Math/Equity Coaching position. Tracy’s assignment includes McKinley, and she is thrilled to be able to continue to impact McKinley students and teachers by expanding upon the equity work that we began last year. Lauren Lawinger will step into 5th grade and is excited to build upon the relationships with students and parents that she formed last year. Replacing Lauren in 4th grade we welcome Michael Elrod, who taught at Gaenslen Elementary and for our Wauwatosa Summer School for the past two years. Michael noted that this is his dream assignment--fourth grade was his most impactful grade in elementary school. Joy Provan has taken a one-year leave of absence to stay home with baby Declan. Colleen Lovelace, previously at Brown Deer elementary, steps in as Joy’s replacement for this year.
Some of you have noticed that our flag is missing. This past winter the flag and rope dislodged from the pole and wrapped around the power lines. It needed to be removed and replaced. We anticipate having a new flag in the next week or two. I will work with some of our scouts to have an opening day Flag Raising Ceremony at the first bell and then will hold an informal meet and greet for any parents wishing to linger afterward. More information will be forthcoming. Other improvements still on the schedule: the bricks that families purchased should be in place on the grassy area of the 90th street entranceway before school begins, the rock wall on the north playground is scheduled to be replaced, and some building spaces are being updated to provide more comfort for staff. Buildings and Grounds has been informed about the peeling surface of the merry-go-round and they are working with the manufacturer to resolve the issue.
A heads up on something to consider being a part of: In a joint effort with PTO president Lindsay Stadler, we are looking into forming a School Culture Advisory Committee with representation from parents and teachers. Stay tuned as we work out the details on this, and please let me know if you have ideas about considerations for such a committee.
A reminder that the building will be open on August 17th from 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. for packet pickup and class lists viewing. Charlotte will also be here on Friday the 18th from 9-2 and Monday the 21st from 8-2 for packet pickups for those who cannot make it on the 17th. Please enter the main doors on 89th Street. On August 22nd, forms & fees drop off and school photos will be in the gym from 1-5 p.m. The PTO, Sodexo Food Service, and Right at School representatives will be available for you as well.
I wish you all many hours of pleasure and play these last weeks of summer!

From the District Technology Team
Every year we collect parent signatures on an acceptable use agreement for permission for students to use technology while in school. A new version of the agreement can be found here: https://goo.gl/hEZ1Wk. The signature page will be included in your family's form packet. We need a signature page for each student.
"Reading this Document"
This guideline is broken down into sections. Each section has, at the start of it, an overview paragraph titled “Plain English Summary". The “Plain English Summary” overview demonstrates, and talks simply, about some examples of the relative section so that the reader can better understand what is meant/expected. The “Plain English Summary” overviews only demonstrate examples and are not all-encompassing. If you still are unsure about your interpretation of a guideline after reading the “Plain English” overviews, then contact your teacher for clarification.
The “Plain English Summary” overviews are only included for your convenience. The sections titled “Verbiage” contain all language relevant to the specific topic. Understand that this document is to be read in its entirety and is the binding guideline document for technology resource use in the Wauwatosa School District (hereafter called WSD).
This document does not describe in detail every single instance of acceptable and unacceptable actions and activities that can occur while utilizing WSD technology resources. Due to the constantly changing environment related to technology, such a thing is an impossible task to achieve. However it attempts to cover, as broadly as possible, such items.
Most acceptable/unacceptable use can be determined via the use of “common sense” when taken in context with this document. However, if you are unsure if something you wish to do is permissible and it is not specified in this document, then you are expected to seek the advice of a teacher.
