Principal's Office
Here is our Roadrunner Weekly for the week of May 13th through May 17th. I wanted to begin today's newsletter by wishing all of our amazing First St. moms out there a Happy Mother's Day! We have incredible kids, and we know you moms out there are the primary reason why! We hope to see all our First St. families at our Open House this Thursday. See the complete schedule in the "Week at a Glance" below. Food trucks will be there also, so plan to join us for dinner!
As you all know by means of the district email sent out by Mr. Leaman, we had a "shelter in place" on Friday due to a gas line that was struck during city road improvement. Kids were moved to the Mormon Church parking area on "O" St. for just over an hour while PG&E repaired the leak. As the situation involved multiple school sites, the district chose to send out one message as opposed to having each school notify their parents separately. We needed to wait to ascertain the duration of the repair before determining if kids would need to be picked up; as it turned out, we were able to return both First St. and GEMS kids back to class safely. I wanted to recognize both our kids and staff for their terrific response to the situation. The students listened and followed directions properly, and our staff did a great job of monitoring students, keeping them calm, and being prepared to do whatever was required of them. I couldn't be prouder of our First St. family!
On a different note, we are still fundraising for our play structure. We received a grant through Miracle Play Systems that saved us 20% ($5,000)! We have revised the Donor's Choose page with the new amount and are awaiting final approval to re-post the page, so stay tuned!
Also, as things wind to a close, we want your feedback on how this school year has gone. Attached below is an on-line parent survey that we hope you can all take the time to complete by May 31st. Please only complete one survey per student. There is an English and Spanish version to choose from. Don't forget to complete the attached "Parent Input Form" by this Friday as well if you'd like to share some thoughts about placement of your student(s) for the 19-20 school year.
Lastly, continue to visit our teacher websites regularly to keep current on homework assignments, weekly projects, and events. Also, i-Ready is an important at home skill-building tool, so please encourage your child to continue using it for 45 minutes or more per subject, per week to stay sharp on their math and ELA skills.
Have a great week!
Mr. Cubias

City Waterline Distribution Rehabilitation Project
Construction of the new underground water main around the perimeter of First Street Elementary and Glen Edwards Middle School began on Wednesday March 20th, 2019 and will continue through June 2019. Traffic controls have been implemented around the work zone for the safety of residents and the workers. In an effort to maintain the safety of the community, we are requesting parents talk to their children about the ongoing construction and urge them to remain on the sidewalks at all times, and only cross the street at designated crosswalks.
Due to the nature of the work being performed, large and heavy equipment is being utilized for the construction of the new water main. Large trucks and materials are also being staged within the work area. The contractor is required to maintain an accessible pathway around the work zone, and will make every effort to protect the work area and prevent children from entering the work area. It is crucial to have parents support to ensure the children are educated and are respectful of the construction activities, so as not to endanger themselves or others. The work area is not a playground and serious injuries could result from entering the work zone without authorization.
Thank you again for your understanding and please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions, comments, or concerns. anyone have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.
