Fairlead Academy I
Fair Winds Journal 08/24/2020
Greetings from Dr. Johnson
Fairlead Families,
Welcome to Fairlead Academy! How exciting. It is the beginning of a new school year. This is a time of renewal; it is another opportunity for growth and learning, and a time to challenge yourselves to reach the next level.
As we are stepping into the 2020-2021 school year, it is likely that we will encounter things that have never been faced before in education. Covid-19, has already presented some new and unusual complications for both educators and students alike. Covid-19 is an unprecedented issue and we as a society, are looking at new and unique ways to overcome the challenges presented by the requirements for social distancing and the concerns for students’ safety.
However, with all that is going on, it also is important to acknowledge that High School is an influential time in a student’s educational pathway. So, it is fortunate that you are starting your journey during these unfamiliar circumstances with us here at Fairlead Academy. In sailing terms, a fairlead is a device that guides a rope in the right direction so that the rope does not become frayed. Fairlead Academy has a similar purpose. Our staff specializes in meeting students where they are, providing students with guidance, individualized attention, and instructional strategies to help them excel. Simply stated, as the challenges of this new normal present themselves, we will not let our students get lost or frustrated in the online world.
Finally, please know that it is my absolute pleasure to be the new leader and (Acting) Academic Dean at Fairlead Academy. I am excited to support parents/guardians, students, and staff as we navigate these new-found waters together. I look at the unknowns that we are facing, as opportunities for all of us to grow and learn. We can then use the lessons taught by these tough circumstances, to teach our students that they are able to adapt to the ever-changing world. In this difficult time, the education of our students is truly a responsibility for all of us to share. Let us work together, Fairlead staff, parents/guardians, and students to make this year extraordinary, in a positive way.
Respectfully,
Lisa M. Johnson, Ed.D.
(Acting) Academic Dean

learning is taking place. Students will have access to Schoology on Saturday, August 29, 2020.

1st Week of School - What you need to know!!
Schoology allows for various methods of instruction, which student will experience during the first week of school. You may hear the terms synchronous and asynchronous learning, but what does that mean to students? Synchronous learning is when the teacher is teaching LIVE and in color on the screen and students are tuning in to learn directly. Asynchronous learning is when the student is working independently on their assigned work; they could be watching a Screencast or they may also be emailing their teacher for guidance or additional resources.
The first week of school will be a combination of both synchronous and asynchronous learning. Students will follow this schedule during the first week of school.
Clever - Helpful Information
