A Message from the Administrative Team

Hi WJHS families,

We hope that you had a wonderful winter break and you are staying warm!

As some of you have likely heard from your children, over break we were asked to investigate ways to keep students 6 feet apart at lunch when they are unmasked, given the surge in COVID cases. In line with our elementary schools, half of our homerooms will eat lunch "picnic style" in the gym while the other half eat in the cafeteria. Next week we will swap the homerooms. We know that this is not ideal, but are working to keep students safe and provide them the social time and break they need to connect with their peers.

Thank you for your continued vigilance of monitoring symptoms of your child before sending them to school. We have heard from several sources that the symptoms of the new variant are more mild, and can result in something as simple as a scratchy throat. We appreciate the thought and care you are giving to keeping your child home and having them tested before returning them to school. Our main goal is to keep staff and students safe and healthy so that school can remain open. We appreciate all that you are doing!

We hope that you have a restful weekend.

Take care,

Kate, Jeff and Eric

CCDPH and IDPH Updates

CCDPH and IDPH have adopted CDC's new guidelines for isolation and quarantine. As this guidance came to us today, we are reviewing all of the details, and it may take time for us to get all of our information and systems aligned to ensure we have the correct return-to-school dates for students.

Nurse Wagner will be in contact with families on Monday, January 10th to review dates and provide accurate return-to-school dates. Please wait to hear from Nurse Wagner prior to sending your child back to school.

Thank you for your understanding and patience, as we align to the guidelines.

Student Vaccination Documentation

As children in the 5-11 age group are beginning to receive their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, we wanted to pass along some information regarding vaccine documentation. If your child is fully vaccinated, or when they become fully vaccinated, please complete some basic information and upload a copy of the vaccination card within PowerSchool. You may disregard this email if you have previously provided information.

At this time, we are not requiring families to provide D39 with documentation of the vaccination record. Please be aware, however, that those without a record of vaccination on file will be required to follow the health protocols for unvaccinated individuals.

These instructions are only for parents of children with COVID vaccination cards who have received the final dose of the COVID vaccination. Do not proceed until your child has received the final dose.

  • Take a photo or scan your child’s COVID vaccination card
  • Use a desktop/laptop and navigate to the PowerSchool Parent Portal at ps.wilmette39.org
  • Once logged in, click Forms on the left side
  • Select COVID Vaccination Upload
  • Complete the form for each child

8th Grade Student Government Program

For over 40 years, WJHS 8th graders have participated in the Student Government Leaders Program, sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Wilmette. By taking on the roles of various community administrators and leaders, students learn about local government and civil service and are assigned a local elected official or department head to work with. The entire program culminates with a mock board meeting where students demonstrate their knowledge of current issues and debate the merits of each topic. Click HERE for further details and sign-up information regarding this optional program. There are limited spots available.

8th Grade Graduation and Diploma Name Form

SHIELD Testing and Other COVID-19 Testing Resources

Thursday afternoon, 395 students and staff participated in SHIELD testing. We also appreciate those who have tested at other locations throughout our community. COVID-19 metrics from our community and region are updated daily on our COVID-19 Metrics page. If you are in need of COVID-19 testing this weekend and next week, free testing is available at the following locations:

  • SHIELD testing at Wilmette Junior High, Saturday mornings (8-11 am). Open to registered D39 students and staff only. No appointment necessary.

  • NorthShore Clinical Labs is offering testing at Marie Murphy School, Saturday (9 am-2 pm). Open to students, staff, parents/guardians and siblings. Click here to schedule an appointment.

  • Visit Healthcare Labs is offering testing at Central School’s Misner Auditorium (620 Greenwood Ave., Glencoe) next Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday (Jan. 10, 12-13, 3:45-7 pm). Open to the public with no appointment necessary.

  • Additional testing locations throughout our community. See information provided on our D39 COVID-19 Testing Site.

Adjustment to COVID Communications

In an effort to streamline our communication, District 39 will be slightly modifying its COVID communications. Families will continue to receive direct communication via an email or phone call if their child is considered a close contact to a positive case and an email if a positive case was present within their child’s homeroom. However, schools will no longer send an email to communicate positive cases within the building. In lieu of these school-wide communications, positive cases within the building will continue to be tracked on our COVID-19 metrics page. Updated daily, our metrics page displays local and regional trends as well as a breakdown of COVID cases by school.

COVID-19 Booster Shot Approved for 12-15 year olds

New Trier will partner with Jewel to host a Pfizer booster clinic for those age 12+ at the Northfield Campus on Wednesday, January 12 from 3-8 pm in the student cafeteria. The CDC is recommending COVID-19 booster vaccines for people ages 12 and up who are 5 months past their second dose of Moderna or Pfizer dose or 2 months past the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Anyone (parent, student, community member) who meets the above criteria may get a booster at this clinic. Please click this link to register for an appointment and for more information about the clinic.
