"Lessons from Gate A-4" - Rev. Mary Gear and the Pacific Western Region Staff Team
In her poem "Gate A-4”, Arab-American poet Naomi Shihab Nye shares an account of distress, compassion, and community as she is called to interpret Arabic for a fearful traveler at an airport. As many of us take to the highways, airways, and railways this November and December, the PWR Staff has put together a worship service that touches on the themes of the poem, and questions such as Who are we called to care for? When do we answer the call to serve? Where might we be surprised by grace?

Thanksgiving Potluck
No Thursday Programming this week, for Thanksgiving. Thursday dinners, classes, and Spiritual Practices return on December 1.
Challenge Accepted!
The Funding Our Future capital campaign is moving well. The Capital Campaign Cabaret – Songs in the Key of “Warm” was a fun celebration of OUUC and our campaign to keep the building warm! We have had almost $60,000 committed thus far, so we need commitments of $232,000 to wrap up the campaign.
To help spur us along, Rev. Mary and John Gear issued a challenge that they would match $5,000 of new pledges. Since issuing the challenge on Sunday, over $6000 has been donated, handily meeting the challenge! Thank you all who participated.
If you have any questions about the Capital Campaign, please visit the Capital Campaign page, where you can read the Frequently Asked Questions, and review the Building and Grounds Committee’s Reserve Study which details all of the building maintenance issues currently needed, and those we can expect in the future.
Please take time today to make YOUR commitment to OUUC and help Fund Our Future! If you have any questions, please reach out to Barry Zickuhr or any others of the Capital Campaign Committee or members of the Board.
Letter Writing CampaignPlease Join our new AntiRacism Team in a letter-writing campaign: The OUUC Anti-racism team invites you to practice allyship by answering a call from Washington Coalition for Police Accountability (WCforPA). No later than November 30, please send an email or letter to Olympia’s mayor, city council, and police department asking them to please "adopt the Attorney General’s Model Use of Force policy in full." For more information and an example letter: Leaves for Love and Lives (padlet.org) | New Support GroupInterest has been expressed in having a support group for parents of trans, non-binary, or otherwise gender nonconforming or gender queer kids or youth. If you are a parent who would like to join a group such as this for the purpose of mutual support, celebration of our kids, and helping each other figure it all out, please email Rev Sara.
Right now, she is thinking the best time could be a Sunday 12:30-2:00 pm, the same time as youth group, once a month. But suggest other times if that doesn’t work for you | New Economic Justice TeamAre you interested in the topic of Economic Justice? Our new Economic Justice Team meets on the 4th Monday at 6:30 pm, on Zoom. The team will be focusing on educating the congregation about economic justice and creating support that equips us all to take action for economic justice and solidarity. All are welcome to join the team. Our next meeting is on Monday, November 28, 6:30 pm. Email Rev. Sara to get the Zoom link. |

Holiday Giving TreeAt LP Brown Elementary School over 70% of the families are low-income and many could benefit from some assistance to ensure they have what they need for the holidays. This year, LP Brown is hosting a Giving Tree. Families who sign up for the Giving Tree will be given gift cards to purchase holiday gifts for their children as well as groceries for a family meal. This provides the family with assistance while also ensuring that they still have agency to get what works best for their family. OUUC is helping out by collecting gift cards for this Giving Tree. We are seeking $25 gift cards to Target, Walmart, Safeway, Fred Meyer, and Grocery Outlet. Please bring gift cards to Rev. Sara no later than Thursday, December 8. | Thank You!
Thanks to the OUUC crew that came out last Saturday to clean the parking lot on a cold but sunny morning! We can see the faded parking space lines now, and the mulch pile is much reduced and protecting the landscaping. Thanks, Jerald, Gail and Fritz, Ann and Rich, Sally, Frank, Ann, Bernie, Kent and Mo, Susan and Joe, and Helen! Many hands do make light work! Join us next month (tentatively December 17) when we continue the ongoing maintenance of our spiritual home! | Supply Drive for our Homeless Neighbors!Help spread warmth and cheer this holiday season. We are collecting gift bags that will be distributed through the Community Kitchen new: gloves, scarves, hats, socks, bath towels, hand warmers, and reusable plastic cups and plates. Look for a donation box in the Commons between now and December 1st. |
