What's up in our classroom

Week of January 4th

Happy New Year!!!

I wish you and your family all the best in the new year!

Reading and Writing

Reading--Our study of informational text, or nonfiction, resumes with a continued focus on text features. We're applying our learning to our reading of Scholastic News, a wonderful news magazine for kids. Informational text selections from our anthology are being shared in class.

We'll also be reading persuasive writing to use as mentor texts for our next writing genre.

Writing--Persuasive/opinion writing is our next writing genre. We've already started some small writing in this genre within our Scholastic News Debate section. Now we'll focus on the components of this genre culminating in the composition of a longer essay.

Homework

Reading Log-- I continue to recommend an opportunity for fluency practice. Once a week have your child read aloud to you and discuss the part that was read. Here is a link to the Reading Log.

Spelling-- This week our pattern words study is on the suffix -ness. Homework is due on Friday, the date of our test.

Fifth Grade Field Trip

Thursday, Jan. 21st, 9am-1:30pm

1800 Congress Avenue

Austin, TX

Our field trip to the Bob Bullock Museum is Thursday, January 21, 2016. We will be leaving around 9:00 am and returning around 1:30 pm. Your child will need a sack lunch and a drink. Your child may purchase a sack lunch and drink from the school cafeteria or bring one from home. PTA has paid for your child to attend the field trip, so the cost for your child is free to enter and see the 3-D movie Humpback Whales. You should find the permission slip in your child's Wednesday binder. Please fill out and sign in two places, top portion and bottom portion.

If you are interested in attending the field trip, you must be an approved volunteer for Leander I.S.D., and the cost is $20 for the museum. Please send an email to let your child's homeroom teacher that you would like to attend and be a chaperone. Unfortunately, you will not be allowed to ride the bus, but you may meet us at the Bob Bullock Museum where you will pay to enter and see the 3-D movie. If you have any further questions, please contact your child's homeroom teacher.

If you are interested in chaperoning and are a parent in my homeroom class, please use the RSVP button to respond or send me an email. Thanks!
